What crimes do women commit that are given offensively mild names?

Men don't "wolf whistle" they sexually harass women and girls
They don't "flash", they indecently expose themselves, usually whilst masturbating starring at their victim.
Do any women's crimes get this treatment? I can't think of any...

@EllenLRipley I have never heard of a woman 'flasher'

Then that's just you. I can assure you that women do flash and I have seen women flashing.

Is it possible that you don't hear of women flashing because it isn't reported? The overwhelming majority of people (myself included) would frankly not care if a woman flashed and I would never bother to report this, but if a man flashes, then at least some of those incidents would be reported to the police.

Women "flashing" generally means exposing tits to a receptive audience or "mooning" neither of which are crimes.

Women could also expose their tits or arse to people, or an audience, who are not receptive, and therefore, that would be a crime (but again, rarely reported because almost no one cares).

The police are currently searching for a woman who flashed her tits at the 12th July parade, so clearly it does happen (but personally, I wish the police across the UK would investigate real crimes instead).

If you know of women who've exposed their vulva/vagina and masturbated "at" people please add a link as I cannot find anything at all.

I'm not sure if you're being obtuse, because clearly that does happen.

I will not be providing links because it likely violates the Terms of Use, but just to pull one example off my head... Shell Jubin in the 5th season of Big Brother would routinely run around naked on TV. One day she decided to use the lawn mower naked. On another occasion, she was standing with a towel wrapped around her, then exposed herself and made the "woooo!" noise when she saw a housemate.

Flashing by men is often a rung on the ladder to rape and murder (see: Wayne Couzens).

Yes. Flashing, for example.

There is also the noted phenomenon when sex between women and children tends to be worded more softly in tabloid newspapers than the same crimes committed by men.

I wouldn't say worded more softly. They do tend to be worded in a way that plays up the woman's attractiveness (if she is young and attractive). There is sometimes an element of "phwroar lucky schoolboy" which is abhorent.

I will say - this almost always comes from men. I don't think women are less judgemental of women that prey on boys than they are of men that prey on girls. (The well regarded experts on human nature South Park did a whole episode with this as the joke).

Whereas, male sex crimes are minimised by women and men.

biscuitandcake · 25/07/2024 20:12

@shuggles flashing one's tits is not the same as flashing one's genitals. If women showing their upper bodies to an unreceptive audience is being minimised as not that bad, then men showing their upper bodies to an unreceptive audience is even more so (I saw a shirtless man in Tesco's today. I did not call the police). It isn't considered a crime at all (if it was, the police would do nothing else).

Can’t think of any for women

Men don’t ‘goose’ women, they sexually assault them

Goose is one of the worst. I was sexually assaulted when I was 10 and I distinctly remember the policeman saying 'did he just goose you?' I nodded because I didn't know what it meant and I remember thinking how innocent it sounded. And no, it wasn't just that, but that is bad enough.

shuggles · 25/07/2024 21:03

@biscuitandcake Fair enough, although I already provided an example of a woman flashing the bottom half... and a quick Google search brings up numerous incidents of women flashing their genitals in public, so I'm not sure which search engine @EllenLRipley was using.

sadabouti · 26/07/2024 18:33

Turning tricks.
Street walking.
Escorting.

But they're all variations on prostitution.

I take your point OP that there is significant downplaying of more typically male offending when it comes to violence against women.

True. Men often minimize sexual abuse of adolescents by women with comments about how "lucky" he is. I've actually never heard a man denounce it, but have heard plenty of women do so.

Edited

Exposing tits isn't anywhere near equivalent to a man pulling out his dick in front of some terrified woman and is not a crime in many justifications, regardless of the audience.
It's interesting, because since coming on MN I have heard a lot of objections from women to equality in toplessness.
It seems to be a pocket of resistance on this subject which I seldom find elsewhere, especially on feminist chats, where it's almost unheard of.

Outwiththenorm · 26/07/2024 20:51

‘Date rape’ is another male one which minimises - ‘oh it was just on a date?’ As if it’s over now.

FrancescaContini · 26/07/2024 21:02

I can only think of two particular expressions that are used to minimise the actions of men killing women: “honour crime” ( = murdering a female relative because she’s fallen in love with or had sex with a man you don’t like) and “crime of passion” ( = murdering your wife or girlfriend in a fit of blind rage).

Nothing remotely passionate or honourable about murdering your wife or girlfriend or sister.

shuggles · 26/07/2024 21:05

@FrancescaContini “crime of passion” ( = murdering your wife or girlfriend in a fit of blind rage).

This one isn't gender specific though, it just refers to people committing crimes when they are feeling intense emotions, and it isn't specific to men murdering women (the vast majority of people murdered by men are other men).

WTAF?!

This creep is actually trying to allege that women masturbate AT people in public in the same way that men do. And no doubt he will try to assert that the prevalence of this in women is equal to men. I understand male flashing is usually a precursor to physical sexual assault/ rape. I suppose that means women must commit rape just as much as men.

‘Date rape’ is another male one which minimises - ‘oh it was just on a date?’ As if it’s over now.

And yet if a woman forces a man to have sex with her then it isn't rape at all, legally speaking.

Talk about minimisation, eh?

TheHuntSyndicate · 27/07/2024 10:27

Nagging - often is emotional abuse and being manipulative.

Waterboatlass · 27/07/2024 10:32

Honey trap around fraud or enticing a victim otherwise?

Nit cutesy but I find the terms child pornography or prostitution particularly abhorrent as makes is sound like the child has agency. It's abuse.

Lemonyfuckit · 01/08/2024 23:10

This is literally the epitome of "boys will be boys" isn't it.

Luminousalumnus · 01/08/2024 23:17

Smacking - otherwise known as assaulting a child
