Bbc story today that a 15 year old girl was at the beach with her friends when an older male in his twenties pulled her out to sea and raped her. Are girls not safe anywhere?! I'm not making any new or interesting points but just sharing my despair and sadness that a young woman was having a fun day with friends and would never have guessed she was at risk of any harm.

My DDs both train in Krav Maga. I’m confident that it would be of some use if they were ever attacked (although it is much less useful for an attack by an intimate partner). It does require regular training continuing basically forever to maintain the skills and train out the natural freeze response.

Freezing is normal. You need to take a rape safety course so you know what to do. I did at a respected US university. The local police taught it and explained and helped us to develop a plan. Running away was no.1. The police ( one whose niece was there) also seconded my recommendation that women get a gun and train. I worked for a firearms foundation years ago and knew the stats. Women who are trained in firearms are way safer! No man is going to mess with you if he knows you're armed he will pick an easier victim.

Even if we're all trained in gunship, the likelihood of a 15 year old girl on a beach having a gun to hand in case some man drags her into the sea to rape her is....?

I applaud you.

I went to Judo but will always remember being told that "run fu" is the best thing to do for your safety if you can.

I took my daughter to personal safety classes from a young age. She progressed to Judo but she's recently decided to switch to Krav Maga with a friend.

Her friend is taking it due to recently breaking up with a violent partner. Judo was of little help. If anything, knowing she'd done it made him angrier and more determined to hurt her.

These classes are great for flexibility and strength as well as giving skills that may save you that you'll hopefully never need to use.

I'm sure something similar happened a few years ago as well. Although I don't recall if it was in the UK or the US

Just read this is the same incident.

Men respect violence inflicted by other men. Women who inflict violence on men usually have a weapon and know they had better make it count or that guy will hurt you very badly indeed.

It's a fantasy to imagine a woman can really hit a man and him not become vastly angrier than a man doing the same. This is how most women are killed in their own homes. It's a fantasy for Hollywood films that a woman can strike a man down, and a very dangerous one.

Many women in the US are armed. It’s a fantasy to think it makes women safer. The more weapons you have circulating in a community, the more they are used against women.

And the vast majority of sexual assault is by men known to women, in circumstances when a woman is unlikely to be able to use a weapon, even if she has one.

Evidence or just wishful thinking?

Women who have guns are trained to use them and won't hesitate to do so.

Americans are just delusional about guns and the horrendous harm they cause. Look at all the dead children, thousands and thousands killed in schools or playing with firearms, doesn’t change their mind.
Rape is insidious and a power play by men. They do it because they can. They don’t care about us. I’m 52. When I was a teen, early 20s I used to go to nightclubs dancing. One particular venue had a group of guys who would line up in two rows and as you walked through they’d so very quickly jam their hands up your dress, pull your knickers aside and digitally penetrate you. This was great fun for them they’d all laugh and no one thought anything of it. Even if just slap their hand away and walk off. Happened to me twice. I still hate anyone doing that to me.

That poor girl. Trauma for life.
What kind of sick bastard does that to a child. Rhetorical question. I despair at the world sometimes.
I really hope she has access to long term therapy.
