Which book do you consider most pivotal, most influential or that had the most impact on you?

Can't pick just one, sorry.

Ann Oakley's 'Sex, Gender and Society'

Sara Ruddick's 'Maternal Thinking'

Sheila Jeffreys' 'Unpacking Queer Politics'

Bubblesdevire · 08/03/2024 08:45

Well two of those I haven’t read so thank you- I assume you suggest them as they are great books rather than contentious?!

Which 2 haven't you read?!

The Bible. Jesus placed men and women equally. He told parables about both sexes rather than just about men for men. He had female disciples in a society where women were expected to stay quiet, not get involved, not have opinions, and play house.
He was a greater advocate for equality than any man before or since.

He may have been, I don't know enough to argue one way or the other.

But the Bible is definitely not a feminist text!

This requires a very selective reading of the Bible.

I’d go with the de Beauvoir too, for all its flaws — so much subsequent feminist thinking is indebted to it.

The New Testament - read The Gospels. Focus on Jesus. Always focus on what Jesus says and does. Not on what others claim He said.

But we don’t know what he said or did, apart from what the gospel writers, only one of high was written during the possible lifetime of eyewitnesses, say he did or said.

The female eunuch by Greer (whether you love her or hate her!)

PuneorPlayonWords · 08/03/2024 12:29

If we need to rebuild society then Invisible Women. Embed what both women and men need from the start.

BlueFairyBugsBooks · 08/03/2024 12:33

Some brilliant ones I've read recently. So not just one. Maybe not the best. But less known and deserve recognition.

It's a (wo)man's world. Stella Beake.

Being a woman (who's had enough). Lynn B. Mann

Good Girl Deprogramming. Michelle Minnikin

Pink Camouflage. Gemma Morgan

Sorry, ‘only one of WHICH was written’.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, surely?

Isnt the New Testament entirely other people's claims of what Jesus said.....?

Another vote for The Female Eunuch, which really resonated with me when I read it as a teenager.

Remind me how many female apostles there were?

downsizedilemma · 08/03/2024 12:58

Woman on the Edge of Time by Marge Piercy. A novel, and written in the early 1970s, and she really covered it all.

The Second Sex is also a good shout.

The women's room by Marilyn french is very good.
