after a few days of manic speculation, it turns out Sam Kerr has been charged with calling someone a “stupid white bastard.” I’m white and I can’t get too worked up about this! Yes it was not ideal conduct, but a crime of racism?

You can't be racist against a white person, anti-whiteness is not racism, because white people are the oppressor. White people created and controlled the hierarchy that enforces systemic racism, we cannot be victims of it.
It's like you can't have reverse sexism.

Nope, that is not what I mean, it is however what some on here believe.

I mean that everyone can be racist and everyone can be sexist.

Here in Australia it’s seen almost as a joke, as it’s such a mild insult compared to what police officers are used to here. I have seen funny memes.
Was it the police officer himself who pressed charges? Maybe he has strong personal beliefs about “reverse racism”?
Or do they normally lay charges on everyone who calls a police officer (or nurse and other public sector workers) a derogatory name now in the UK? If so, that would make sense but still, you’d expect something more like a warning or caution considering they have such big problems with serious crimes especially in London.

Police officer probably has it recorded, and therefore it's a nice easy win for the Crown Prosecution Service who would have made the decision to bring the case, not the police. Officer gets a tick for solving a crime and CPS gets to meet an internal target.

And for those who think this stuff is unusual it is not. The police love these sorts of cases because they wear body cams now.

So if the tables turn in another hundred years (for the sake of argument) it'll be OK to say 'stupid black bastard' but not 'stupid white bastard'?

What about 'stupid yellow bastard' given that Asian men have better financial and health outcomes than white men?

So if he'd called her a stupid bitch, we'd be saying that was alright and take your feelings out of it. She spewed in the back of the taxi, didn't want to pay the cleaning fee, argued with the taxi driver, then called the policeman a stupid white bastard. But the copper deserved it and should have walked away? No. You don't use someone's skin tone or ethnicity as a slur. I'm sure she would be the first to complain if that was done to her. You can't promise double standards
