I went to the Women in Revolt exhibition at the Tate over the weekend

It's an art exhibition about female artists and feminist activism.

I was curious to see how many male women artists would be included and I don't know whether to feel pissed off or thankful that there was only one.

In the caption next to the two paintings, the blurb said that it was only after going through gender reassignment surgery that he understood what it was to feel marginalised, ignored, demeaned, etc. I'm paraphrasing but that was the sentiment.

And all I could think was, well, yes, quite. Surely for him that was the whole point?

I thought it was a brilliant exhibition. I'm not sure I spotted those paintings though. I came away with the impression that it was all about women apart from a small display in the first room with a magazine interview with a transexual.

I was quite surprised to see the Tate run this exhibition actually. I thought they were entirely ideologically captured and would much prefer a queer exhibition to a boring old feminist exhibition. I was very pleasantly surprised.

I went with my 22 year old daughter a couple of weeks ago. I noted the presence of Jan Morris without surprise, but just having one or two trans women represented seemed quite restrained given the current climate and pressures. Perhaps the curators decided to do just enough to not get completely slammed or cancelled for its second wave content.
My daughter did not know about Greenham Common or Section 28, so it was a good educational experience for her. She - like many young women- is something of a footsoldier for trans rights though, I have to tread carefully so we don’t completely fall out over it.

The whole argument that it was only one man that got a spotlight in a women only exhibition feels very defeatist.

Surely one is one too many.

This is about women and feminism.

I thought this was great too.. Loved the stuff about childcare/Hackney /Greenham Common etc. A tiny piece toward the end about miscarriage, v moving. Given the degree to which the Tate generally goes I thought it marked a change in direction of sorts....

I went to that exhibition. I was very disappointed to see that they'd included men in it.
i also wondered if the period it covered stopped at 1990 so that they wouldn't have to confront the trans issue and the war on women's rights.
on a lighter note it did seem that taking their clothes off formed quite a large portion of the revolt.

He/she didn’t get much of a spotlight- I was only responding to the previous post. Personally I have no problem with someone identifying/presenting AS IF they are a woman, provided I’m allowed to maintain the truth- that they aren’t. There was one related thing that gave me pause for thought, one man (artist) who had transitioned genders was shocked by how much worse he was treated as a woman. I pointed this out to my daughter, and she said, maybe it was because he was a trans woman, after all many trans women don’t ‘pass.’
I thought I was fairly hardline gender critical until I signed up with Mumsnet and UnHerd. It would seem I’m a bit soft in believing that some middle ground needs to be found on this issue. Which really isn’t the biggest issue of our times by a long way. That would be the climate.

Hun the climate is going to be fine. We're nearing the end of another interglacial cycle and the bit of extra warmth might save us from freezing our ass off

People forget we are in an ice age and we're in a warm peak of an ice age.

Nature and the planet will be fine. Humans might be fucked, but if we don't sort our society out right now it won't even matter.

We need to get rid of this woke culture and incompetent politicians and captured media and have actual real conversations. Including about climate and the conflicting data and nonsense that is being peddled along with the TWAW shite. The gender ideology issues is just one of woke cancer sores that need to be cut out before we can pick up where we left off 20 years ago.

Just been.

Also disappointed that there was art from a biological man included talking about his experience of gender reassignment.

It didn't belong in the exhibition in my opinion.

If the Tate want an exhibition about the trans experience, and trans rights movements they can bloody well organise one. Don't shoehorn it into one about women.

And yes, very concerning to see that many of the themes that come up now - domestic labour, childcare, menstruation politics were also issues then and haven't changed one jot.

Section 28 bit was sobering I was just a child when it was all kicking off and don't really remember much about it and it certainly wasn't discussed openly in our household (parents social circle was very married with 2.4 children). But all the chattering about the local primary school headteacher "coming out" now makes more sense. In fact I wonder if he did so as a stand against Section 28. Sadly my Mum isn't around any more to ask.

There was a really unnecessary reference to trans rights in the Room blurb for the first room - it just felt really out of place and as if it had been included as a bit of a tick box.

Weird how they frame being a lesbian as not an issue too! Sadly still a lot of prejudice (and of course the male lesbians)

@OneMorePlant

Sorry, are you saying "woke cancer sores" with a straight face?

No I'm typing them with a straight face. What is your issue?
