Cat's protection 'domestic abuse' campaign...

This came up on my Facebook feed and I'm feeling a bit pissed off about it. Cat's protection must think they've come up with an emotive campaign to get people donating, but I think to compare animal cruelty to domestic abuse is pretty Insulting to the women survivors.

It feels like by using the term for cats, it undermines the gravity of the situation for women. It's hard enough for most people to understand how impactful domestic abuse can be, without now making out cats go through it too.

I'm thoroughly annoyed, I think I'll send an email tomorrow....

what do you think?

Surely domestic abuse is any abuse suffered by anyone in a domestic environment. Abuse in a home affects everyone and everything living in that environment sometimes directly and sometimes indirectly. Men, women, children, cats, dogs, whoever it is they should have support to leave and Cat Protection is obviously going to be aimed at cat’s though it may make the decision clearer for someone who is worried about leaving a pet so I’m all for it.

When me and my children moved into refuge accommodation, we weren’t allowed to take our cats with us, it was absolutely heartbreaking and caused no end of stress.. thankfully a pet fostering charity took them in and I am so incredibly grateful because once we got a new tenancy of our own our girls were able to come home. It would have been an additional layer of trauma to have to give up our beloved family pets for good on top of everything else.
I know OP has clarified that she misunderstood (and props for that because it’s not easy!) but if anyone is interested in pet fostering, it’s honestly an amazing thing to do for families.

This. The ad has confused people about the campaign, but all must agree pet fostering to help people escape DV is a good thing. 👏

Yes, agree with everyone saying it’s poorly worded, but it’s for fostering cats whose family are leaving abuse. There’s a shelter in my city that actually has a pet rescue centre on the grounds of the women and children shelter. Pets can stay there and be taken care of, and the family can visit and play with pets while they’re all at the facility. It’s such a terrific idea.

Oh OP, you're not really wrong, in that it's a very badly written ad. But posters are correct - it's about encouraging fostering so women can leave safely with their pet temporarily taken care of. Refuges don't take animals and pets are often cited as reasons not to leave, because no-one wants to leave their loved pet with an abuser.

The writing could be a LOT clearer though.

Yes I'm sure this is what it means. Dog's Trust do the same thing.

Just an update on this as I couldn't go into much detail earlier.
The new name for the Paws Protect service is Cats Protection Lifeline. The charity has also had a rebrand which is public from today so hopefully the language will be clearer to all in future campaigns. Look out for the new ad during Bake Off next week but have a tissue at the ready 😥

This thread is a bit ridiculous, tbh. Abuse is abuse. I'm shocked at the lack of compassion that suggests that only one group should have the monopoly on words relating to it or the silly nitpicking about the words used.
