So if there are ‘everyone knows’ sexual predators in every industry - what do we do?

I work on the edge of an industry where there is one a bit like RB. Very famous, everyone in the industry knows he’s an absolute shit bag, so how do we stop it? I don’t have any personal experience of him so can’t do anything. If I went to the police and said x person in my industry is well known for being one to keep young female colleagues away from etc, what can they do? This person makes a LOT or money for his employers so I can’t see anyone speaking up any time soon. So what can/should we do?

Offer to support the women you know he has abused - to report it to the employers, the police, whoever. Talk to the women, tell them you believe them.

I don’t know any of the women. I don’t have any direct contact with him or the people he deals with, as I said, I’m on the edge of the industry, for example if he was an actor - I would be the equivalent of someone who scouted locations, so I would know technical people in the tv production company but not people he would deign to deal with personally. NB he is NOT an actor. Odious, (successful) turd but not an actor.

Email a newspaper anonymously with your account and suggest they investigate.

It’s really good the media are investigating Brand but do any of us actually believe their aren’t men like this within journalism/broadcasting?

I try to gently warn young women off working for these people, or at least to be careful. I also tell the other men how bad they are. Some have decided to avoid working with them, some don't care. The more open the secret is, the better. In my industry these people won't ever be fired, but they will eventually retire and hopefully by not be able to destroy more women's careers it will leave some female replacements.

IME what happens is someone warns the new women. In my case it was a 'pay it forward' deal as a nice bloke warned me, I warned the new woman and so on.

The issue is that in industries with high turnover, few opportunities and men with immense power and influence, it's not effective. Which is why it happens more with rich, famous men in industries with huge numbers of people who want to work in them.

Consider contacting Rosamund Urwin, one of the writers on the Brand story. You never know, she may be sitting on a couple of reports already.
