Do you know this word? I hate it. My students use it and it smacks if being very boysy and objectifying. They're not saying it about females, but joking about something else. Is it seen as ok or would you find it inappropriate, even if it's not about women?

I'm concerned that I teach a male dominated subject and I loathe this male 'banter' stuff but fear if I say something I'll get such a backlash. I already feel my respect slipping away as I get older.

No it means fat. They’re just trying to spin it as positive and attractive. And fat is negative, it’s not a good idea on any level and it’s time people woke up to that.

I think that's a really rude and ignorant comment. Not all people are naturally skinny, and some people can be larger, and attractive and also healthy.

It’s not rude or ignorant.

it’s calories in v calories out.

I was 4 stone overweight and it was causing high blood pressure, stomach ulcer, and a bad back. That all went when I lost the weight - which took 4 years.

I was eating too much. Simple as that. There was nothing “natural” about it.

Grow up.

Ok, I had posted this in feminism for a reason. Not aibu. Thanks for all comments.

Sorry it's descended into a barny. Not my intention.

I've lived in a country with Pacific Islanders, they are genetically bigger than other people from birth! They are not fat or lazy as people like you would like to believe. Do some research. Just because you have body image issues don't portray them onto other people. As PP Beyonce is not overweight, she quite stunning. All good OP, will step away from this thread. Sorry to derail, but I found these comments quite offensive and very UN-feminist. Have a great weekend all.

It seems to me you're conflating two different issues. Your issue with the men using this language in essentially their learning environment and your issue with the word itself; it's objectification of women and so forth. I can see how your issue with the latter colours your view on the former. What I will say is that some things, be it words, language, vernacular, style... are just not meant for you. You aren't supposed to 'like' or 'approve' of everything you come across. 'Thicc' to many people is a huge compliment. There are women who for various reasons be it culture, background who will find the word 'thicc' the most offensive word they've come across since 'Karen'. You are among this group and it's okay, it wasn't meant for you.

BluebellBlueballs · 03/06/2023 23:51

Is it a modern word for 'voluptuous '?

If so, I don't have a problem with it.

pondsprite1 · 19/06/2023 00:28

For some reason "Thicc" irks me but I'm not bothered by words like "attractive" or "hot". Probably because I've seen Thicc used to objectify women and and have never known men to be called that.
Maybe the misspelling of Thick bothers me, too - It seems more disrespectful or something.

You're obviously not in more 'meme' based online spaces. Men can be and often are described as thicc. Especially those with big bums, pecs, chunky dad bods etc.

The spelling is AAVE, like most online-evolved words it rooted in talented and funny African American twitter users adapting language to better reflect their culture.

This is exactly why a certain demographic despise that word to the extent they'd rather a train carriage full of men called them a bitch every morning on their commute than countenance that 'thicc' could be anything other than the worst slur you could ever call a woman, barring a 'Karen', that is Smile

Changeforachange · 20/06/2023 19:56

What demographic is that @DojaPhat?

Maddy70 · 20/06/2023 20:01

I'm a secondary teacher. I have never heard this?

Notbeinfunnehbut · 23/06/2023 23:50

I was a 00s teen and unless you looked anorexic you were considered fat by every magazine /advert going

the word thicc doesn’t bother me at all there are far more toxic trends
