trigger warning: csa, vawag

it feels like quite a lot to read in one go like this; not all are being sentenced for violence against women and children - but a lot are is this getting worse and if so why is that do we think or was it always at least this bad and the fact they've sentenced to a custodial sentence actually a good sign?

Locked Up: The criminals justice caught up with in April

They include a man who killed his partner's two-year-old daughter and another who tried to drag a woman in front of a Tube train

Month! Jesus, that was one sickening roll call.

We must remember that this is a news media site and will always choose to publicise the cases that get it the most clicks.

Also, as with all statistics, the number of such cases are unlikely to be the same in any one month over a year or five years. It's possibly coincidental that this month is unusual in that so many cases happened to conclude in it.

It may also be true that domestic violence is being reported more, that the police are getting more willing to investigate DV and CSA and better at it, that the CPS is more wiling to prosecute, that juries are more willing to convict, that judges are more willing to hand down custodial sentences. All if which could be considered good things.

yes I found it a bit of a eye opener. I mean, I know, that's why I'm on the feminism boards - but still wow

I think some forces in Wales are going for the drug pushers and domestic violence abusers. It shows! Pretty scary bunch though.

well in this stance it's all the people who were sentenced to a custodial sentence in Wales during the month of April so whilst that's generally true it wouldn't seem to apply here I think.

Certainly there's no way you could extrapolate from this article, I wouldn't even call it statistics more of a snapshot. We sat in crown court for a month here are all the cases serious enough for someone to be jailed. Part of me sincerely hopes that this was not a representative or typical month

Yes I agree, there is a positive to looking at the cases where someone has been found guilty of the crime and given a custodial sentence.

I want to keep an eye out in the future and see if they do this every month. It was the first piece in this style I saw.

yeah if there is a new focus on that that would explain it and as Cher said not necessarily be a bad thing

Wales Online does such a roundup of perpetrators jailed every month. It's headline is "Locked Up: The criminals justice caught up with in [month] and what happened to them"

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 02/05/2023 22:10

Thank I thought that that might be the case I shall look out for it in future

My force is pushing Domestic Violence on social media - they get replies from women giving examples of when they have failed to help. It’s a conversation though and highlighting the issue.

My experience is that the police can be awesome but that that is certainly patchy and not to be taken for granted

I think Welsh police in my area have focused on driving offences, oil and sheep stealing (yes, that is a thing) and drugs for many years. They are trying to change that which is good. Drugs alcohol and violence against women seem to go hand in hand by the reports of these crimes.

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 02/05/2023 22:58

just to clarify not implying I'm a victim of dv
