www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/mar/15/somaiya-begum-man-jailed-for-life-for-of-niece-who-refused-marriage

Her parents tried to force her to marry her first cousin at the age of 16. She refused and went to the police. Four years later she was murdered by her uncle in what is thought to be an honour killing.

Why isn't this case getting prominence? It is the murder of yet another woman, by a man, for not conforming. I only came across it by chance. And how can we as a society ensure that this doesn't happen again?

I absolutely share your anger about this case. It's horrific. Another bright and successful woman taken from the world.

It has had coverage in the papers and on news channels. The trouble is, news moves so fast that the reports soon slipped off the front page.

This man is a violent thug who battered and abused his own daughter before murdering Somaiya. She took a restraining order and forced marriage protection order out on him (which would have taken huge courage to do) but he still managed to get to her.

I cannot stand the term "honour killing". I am so, so glad that the judge said in court "I reject the prosecution’s suggestion that I should treat this as any form of so-called honour killing."

Agree that the term "honor killing" encourages this line of thinking. It's domestic abuse leading to murder.

Yes, honour killing minimises the horror of it. Good for the judge, but tragic that it came to this.

I'm a social worker (for adults) and used to work in an area with a significant Pakistani population. The levels of DV were horrendous. One woman was severely beaten and hospitalised on a number of occasions. When she had the courage to report her husband to the police she was shunned by the community, both men and women. He was imprisoned for the abuse and she was blamed.
