Prospects as a part-timer?

Posted in Work, but no responses. Thought there might be a bit more traffic here (I hope!)

Has anyone advanced in their career while on reduced hours? I cut down to 3 days following maternity leave. My company say they are open to job share etc, but in practice this seems to be just for entry level/admin jobs, not for any managerial roles. I know one friend at a different company who is a manager on reduced hours, but she was a manager first, then reduced her hours while in post. Everyone else I know that has reduced their hours has then stayed at the same level. Has anyone successfully applied for a promotion while only working part-time?

Yes I have but it took some persuading...for me to apply and I started in a junior role and progressed into a manager role as the opportunity came up.

I then took a new role which was a departure from the industry I was in at the time.

There are sectors and roles that have limited PT roles but I do think it's changing, at least I have noticed this in the time I've been back at work. It might be worth checking out specific websites and recruitment agencies that hire in PT roles

Or think about a bit of a career change that might get you further more quickly? Good luck OP. It can be really tough but not impossible. I'm now ahead of where I was when I left for mat leave and I'm doing something I really love.

I did - I went down to 3 days from 4 after mat leave and when my work restructured about a year later I was matched in to a more senior role without need to interview, then immediately employer started talking about the next jump up. instead, about a year after I side stepped into a specialist area within that senior role with a different employer doing 4 days a week. No intention to move to full time.
