Having seen Prima Facie in the theatre and on live broadcast, I can honestly say Jodie was the best performance I have EVER seen.

Is theatre ahead of the music world here? I know it's far from perfect, but seems to be better than film and music.

And if you haven't seen Prima Facie rent it from NT at home. It is triggering but vital.

Is it excellent or is it an outlier result that will be used to prove a point? Like saying some women are 6 foot so men aren’t taller. Women won all the whatsonstage awards so gender neutral works. But I think on average women lose out in gender neutral awards and an exception to this doesn’t prove the point at all.
Of course it’s fabulous to have so much great female talent.

BlueHeelers · 13/02/2023 06:17

Tend to think it’s an outlier. There just are not the big roles for women as there are for men, consistently year in, year out.

Lots of writers and theatres working to change that though.
Shakespeare's Globe is one example both in their new writing they commission and in productions such as Titus.
The success of Six shows that the same is possible in musicals as well.

So of new works on main stages this year, at least half give women the meatiest roles?

Best Actor, Best Musical and a host of others (returning performer, supporting role) went to women.
What the hell is wrong with celebrating successes when they come
Jodie Comer getting recognition for one of the best one handlers ever in a vitally important play for women and how the justice system comes with crimes against us should be celebrated.
Six! winning as well. The entire premise of which is feminist (and musically clever and fun).
Why can't we celebrate the successes when they come? These weren't pity awards. These weren't tokenistic crumbs.

No-one's "not celebrating" these awards. But I train people in a professional field that's pretty close to the theatre industry, and my young female students just don't see themselves in the industry.

Six came from young women at Cambridge (university) who were sck of not being able to audition for the main roles in most of the classic repertoire. They set up their own companies, they make work that centres women's stories, but there's precious little in the mainstream.

Take the major national subsidised companies - the RSC for example - their repertoire includes 2 or 3 women's characters in each Shakes play (roles written for boys/young men originally). London's National theatre announced the first half of their 2019 with NOT ONE play written by a woman, and the only female director was given a children's play (not on the main stages of the house) to direct.

Sphinx Theatre keeps tabs on this - you may like to read their reports:

Things are changing but there is NO ROOM for complacency. My female undergrads teach me that.

But people aren't celebrating. Didn't see another thread.
Prima Facie was an amazing achievement. Written by, soundtracked and performed by women.

It is great that won!

I think the thread has taken this turn because you invited in discussion with the comparison to the movie industry. But I agree it’s great that they won and I am really looking forward to seeing Prima Facie when I can.

GrammarTeacher · 14/02/2023 21:05

Do. It's fantastic. Hard and difficult but genuinely the most amazing thing I have ever seen. Went to see it again on broadcast night having seen it at the west end. It was still marvellous.
