Man tries to kidnap barista at drive through
DominoBlue · 19/01/2023 23:08
This is terrifying. He attempted to zip tie her hands while she handed him his change.
Its so blatant, he would have known there were cameras there. Poor woman must be so traumatised.
But its almost equally as scary is the fact they have to wear bikinis to work. I can't believe women have to work in those conditions. I can't help wondering if the owner who ever so kindly lets them refuse service to people, also wears a bikini whenever at work?
I hope the link to yahoo news works...

Ffs it's not about being forced to wear a bikini against the employees will... it's about the fact that they seem to only want to employ female employees (do they employ men? Do they wear a bikini too, or are the topless?) and then have them work alone in isolated booths late at night. It's an obviously sexist and risky environment. Of course there will be some women who will either choose to work there because they don't have an issue with the uniform and the risk, or because they need the work. That doesn't make it not a sexist work uniform and a risky work environment.

Having assumed it might be similar to Hooters, it seems to be a step beyond - in terms of what constitutes a "bikini" and what the women are there for.

A 'barista'? working in a bikini?
How the hell does that get passed in an OH&S audit?
CandlelightGlow · 20/01/2023 15:00
Nice bit of victim blaming there from the first poster.
How do we get the message across that men don't have a right to harm women, if we treat women as if they are doing things which warrant them being harmed?
Those things are awful, I read a story on Reddit about a lady who worked in one of those once and they had a similarly creepy story.
Lone working policies are really important in most places, it shouldn't happen. Whether she is wearing a bikini or a yeti suit.

None of this thread is victim blaming. Some of it blames the employer for setting women up as sex objects and therefore increasing their risk. The reasoning being that not only are they at higher risk of being the subject of robbery, as many late night retail establishments are, especially lone operators, they are at greater risk of sexual attack because they are sexually objectified by the job they do.
SleepingStandingUp · 20/01/2023 23:42
Not victim blaming at all, of course she doesn't deserve to be bloody kidnapped, whether she's in a nuns habit of standing there butt naked! I also pointed out lone working was a bad idea, earning because they have no back up, not that they deserve to be hurt and someone else should be there to keep the coffee brewing fgs.
My point was if she's making a free choice to work there, knowing the job spec, and there's nothing to indicate it's that job or starvation, there's nothing on offer beyond coffee, they have the right to protect themselves and refuse service etc. Then is it my place to say she shouldn't be allowed to choose to work there?
Helleofabore · 21/01/2023 06:33
I think the place should be shut down personally. Because it seems that the owners have no care at all for there employees safety. From working with scolding hot liquids and steam without protection to lone working conditions.
I wonder does that employer then provide safe travel home for those women after their shift?

I haven't opened the link, as to do so you have to either accept long-lasting "legitimate interest" cookies or turn scores off individually (yes it's got that bad old system)
Could someone who has read the story confirm where this happened?
SallySunrise · 21/01/2023 06:43
Googled this place and those are not bikinis. Check out their insta and you'll see what i mean.
2023 and we still have places like this.

According to the article it was at the Beankini Expresso in Auburn, WA, USA
Yahoo news cookie consent management pop up showed a reject all button for me.

I've now found an article in the Independent, and it says this took place abroad (in US, Washington state)
Yes, I know that doesn't change the issues, but it does alter the requirements for things like H&S. Also, these sorts of places have pretty much died out in Britain, haven't they? Just tried googling to check Hooters and either its got the crappiest website going or there's only one left.

Hoovers is based in the US. There may be some in other countries but that's not where it originated.
It was fairly obvious that the case in the op would be in the US too. Incredibly backward country.
Helleofabore · 21/01/2023 07:00
Does the USA not have Occupational Health and Safety standards then? What difference does that make to the story ?

Wow. An eye opener, that's for sure. Like I said, a dinosaur of a country with a veneer of civility.

To the story, none. To the response to it, a great deal.
I could tell you a fair bit about British standards. But nothing at all about those that apply in Washington state. What are they? Is that an effective policy area, within that state's system, to look to alter?
MademoiselleTrunchbull · 22/01/2023 21:40
Wow, didn't even know this was a thing. Who the hell even cares what the person serving them coffee at a late night drivethrough is wearing? Such an odd idea.
