Free the nipple on Facebook & Instagram

My first post in this topic I think - I'm a bit nervous about jumping into the debate, I have to admit... But this bothered me so much when I read it this morning, and made me wonder what people here think about it:

The Guardian - Free the nipple: Facebook and Instagram told to end ban on bare breasts

I wanted to think that this was a good thing, removing the distinction/discrimination between men's nipples being "normal" and women's nipples being sexualised across the board, even when they're clearly not (most obviously when being used for the biological purpose, i.e. breastfeeding). But instead the whole thing is about expression of trans and non-binary identities, and this person seems to be tying themselves in knots to avoid even mentioning women as a category that are affected by it:

“It sounds so frivolous to a lot of people to talk about nipples, but if you think about the ways that governments around the world try to control and repress female-identifying bodies, trans bodies, or non-binary bodies, it’s not.”

Aaarrrggghh I'm not female identifying, I'm just female! Why can't we be in the list too, our bodies are also pretty obviously controlled and repressed!!!

And then I read this: “When we talked about this as an issue about cis women, it seemed less important, potentially, than it is now with trans people wanting to be open about their bodies, while anti-trans sentiment is at an all-time-high,”

Just in plain sight 😞When it's about women it's less important.

Totally depressed by the whole thing. Even more so because the upshot will probably just be loads more porn-boob pictures anyway 😠

Is it just me? Anyone else see this and have thoughts about it?

My first time posting in this topic too. You're not alone, I saw that article and it depressed me too.

Just us then?

lurchermummy · 18/01/2023 20:08

Me too. I'm so depressed about this whole thing to be honest.

In one way, I’m glad when misogynists openly state that women are less important. It’s out there, people can read it and recognise what we’re up against.

Big by bit, the truth about this male-supremacist movement may seep into even the most closed minds.

@Ofcourseshecan yes I think that's the only glimmer of light in the whole miserable situation. Eventually surely it will be clear to everyone. I hope...

It’s being discussed on channel 5 Jeremy vine now

I was just about to start a thread.

I saw a photo saying that trans and non binary women are allowed to show their nipples now and thought it had to be a joke.

I read some more which does include women but women have been asking for this since 2013 and have always been ignored or told no.

It is only now that a trans woman and non binary person have said it’s not ok are they all of a sudden changing their minds.

I have not once spoken negatively about trans issues but this is completely out of order and just reminds me that women still do not have anywhere near as equal rights as men do.

The board's recommendation focused on Instagram's ban of two posts by a couple, one of whom is transgender and the other non-binary, who posed topless but covered their nipples to raise awareness around top surgery.

Such an approach makes it unclear how the rules apply to intersex, non-binary and transgender people and requires reviewers to make rapid and subjective assessments of sex and gender,' the board said.
