Letter from MP only addressed to DH

DH received a letter from our local MP the other day.

Just a general letter saying that a number of constituents have contacted the MP about [local issue], and asking if anyone in our house has had similar problems.

Which is all fine, except - this letter is only addressed to DH. There’s no separate letter for me.
I’m also registered to vote. I’ve voted in more elections than DH has.

I can understand why the MP’s office don’t want to waste resources sending two copies of the same letter to the same address, but I’m finding it a lot harder to think of any reason why this letter isn’t addressed to both of the registered voters living at our address.
The only reason I can think of is an automatic assumption that the man of the house is the best person to deal with letters from the MP.

I know this is a trivial matter, but would it be an overreaction to write to the MP’s office asking why they’re not addressing general letters like this to all registered voters in the household?

Not an overreaction at all. Even if they fob you off it might make them think a little

DH could be on a list the Conservatives are targeting for votes.

MajorCarolDanvers · 31/10/2022 22:27

Is your DH first name earlier in the alphabet to you?

It's most likely been sent to the first person in the household in the electoral register.

I always the political direct mauls in our house as my name comes first alphabetically.

Your DH is probably listed first for your house on the electoral roll. I get those sort of letters addressed to me because I listed myself first when we moved in.

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 31/10/2022 22:31

Is that really the only reason you can think of? Couldn’t possibly be a simple mistake or a mail merge error - maybe they meant to put ‘to the householder’ and forgot to delete the names? It’s not unreasonable to ask, but I doubt there’s malicious intent behind it.

Arenanewbie · 31/10/2022 22:33

I have no idea who in our house is listed first in the electoral register. Would it be names in alphabetical order (we all have the same surname) or by age?

Zosime · 31/10/2022 22:36

Perhaps at some point your dh ticked a box saying he'd like to receive mailings from the MP and you didn't. Or you ticked a box to opt out of receiving mailings and he didn't.

WonderingWanda · 31/10/2022 23:02

Did he vote for the mp or party and you didn't. We've both ended up on mailing lists based on previous voting patterns.

I've had tory canvassers come to the house and ask for my husband.

I gave them a mouthful for being sexist dinosaurs, and asked them directly why they weren't interested in my vote. I think they were in their 70s and clearly stuck in the 70s too.

I believe they are more likely to targeting men as they are more likely to be into politics and to vote Conservative.

Apileofballyhoo · 01/11/2022 23:43

That's amazing rtb.

Me too!

However we do live in the constituency for The Minister for the Victorian Era, JRM.

I've been responsible for sending similar in the past in a previous life Blush. It just goes to whoever is on the database first in the house if there's more than 1 adult. Depending on what the letter is about then it may have been sent on taxpayers expense (was there House of Commons branding on it? If it was party branding then less of an excuse) but you wouldn't want to waste money by sending something to everyone in one house. I understand the annoyance though!

verballyincompetent · 02/11/2022 00:05

@MrsMoastyToasty also used to do this (NOT for JRM - but I'm in the same constituency as you!) but it will just be whoever's listed on electoral list first. Most savvy canvassers however would have just asked you if you were Ms MoastyToasty to get round it...

Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 02/11/2022 00:05

I bet it is the first name on the list on the Electoral roll. If your name was first the letter would go to you. Have a look.

carefulcalculator · 02/11/2022 00:10

Often in a campaign they send letter 1 to the first name onthe register, letter 2 to the second (if there is one), letter 3 to the third name (if there is one) etc.

Or they may have his name as a previous contact somehow.

RedToothBrush · 02/11/2022 07:58

First name on the electoral role does not explain or excuse the dickhead canvassers who came to my door.
