How can I make the voice on Google maps navigation male?

I read (on here) how all of the ‘assistant' voices are set to female as default, which is subliminally teaching our child/ boys that 'servant voices' should be female - or teaching them that they can demand things of females. This has been playing on my mind and I want to change everything to male. I’ve started with Google maps and I’m already stuck 🤦‍♀️

This board gets crazier!!

What's 'crazy' about this thread? It seems to have come to an overall consensus that there's a practical reason for using female voices for navigation apps etc.

In the olden days of plug in Tom Tom sat navs, my children then aged about 5 7 and 9 spent many a happy journey recording themselves giving the directions! It was so funny seeing adult passenger reactions if I drove somewhere and these little voices piped up with their interpretations of the rules Grin.

I've got Waze and you can change the voice very easily. Tells you about hazards on the road (police, stopped car, roadworks etc) and it's 99% bang on

As an aside from the reason I posted, I generally prefer listening to men's voices (audio books etc) I never thought about the clarity of female voices.

This sounds like some cod psychology that someone has come up with. You could equally argue that it is teaching people that female voices are highly knowledgable.

This.

This s just some idea some person has come up with. There are 1000 theories like this, none with any proof that the thing actually has that effect.

Apple Maps is male.

Oh wow, I would love Darth Vader.

To answer your question, OP, Google maps uses a default female voice, but if you are signed into it with your google account, it (should) use the voice you have set in your Google Assistant settings.

I use Waze and you can so many voices, male female, celebrities etc
You can even have Father Christmas and Arnold Swarzenegger (DHs current favourite).

This.

I use Waze and have it set to the Master Chief from Halo.

Galaktoboureko · 10/10/2022 12:53

And Waze is loads better. I was stuck in motorway traffic the other day and Google Maps said to stay on whilst Waze told me to come off at next junction. When I followed Waze and came off Google Maps instantly knocked down the journey time from 45 mins to 25 mins. 🤔

I don't want no man telling me what to do.

Sometimes my Google maps switches from a female to male voice. I just figured they is non binary. How very down wiv da kids.

I have visions of Arnie saying "to get to the choppa take the next right at the island " 😁

The Master Chief one is quite similar. 😂

Female voices are more audible while driving, so I'll be leaving it on default.
This goes for radio presenters too. Some of the male ones on R4 are so deep they can't be heard at all.

This. If you're given the option, a female voice is likely to be easier to distinguish over engine (or other) noise. You wouldn't want somebody like Lee Marvin doing your sat nav - it would just act as brown noise and make you keep stopping and dashing to the loo at every single service station!

I changed mine to female as didn't want a man telling me what to do, really annoyed me

Is that really how you see it? Would you not think that you're in charge and it's only really following your instructions - as you are the one who switches the thing on and off, tells it where the destination is to be and are always free to either accept or 'disobey' its instructions?

If you see it as the one in charge, I don't know why you'd want anybody - male or female - telling you what to do, who isn't your parent (if you're a child), your boss or the law.

I mean, you didn't change yours to female since there isn't a male one as being discussed.
You simply left it on default.
