Women in Iran and criticism of feminists

There are violent protests in Iran at the moment due to the death (in police custody, due to a beating by the morality police) of 22 year old Mahsa Amini - RIP). Other women have now been killed: the reason is that Mahsa was, according to the Morality police, showing too much of her hair through not wearing her hijab correctly.

Iran can have whatever laws they like, of course, and women should be free to wear a hijab or not (so not coerced into wearing one, and not coerced out of wearing one - i am aware of problems and issues around this. It is not a criticism of the hijab as such, so let's not get too deeply into that).

I'm a feminist. If i identify as anything in particular it would be more with 2nd wave feminists. I have Thoughts about Gender Identity that i rarely articulate anywhere but here because i can't be bothered with a pile on in a "conversation" that has apparently no room for nuance. (i am not on a "side" here - i can see the pros and cons of many sides of the discussion.)

So yesterday Omid Djalili tweeted a series of pictures/explanations of young women who have been killed around this issue in Iran. Then couldn't resist a dig by adding a final tweet in a good series, that completely pissed me off. And that was: "& GC FEMINISTS!

WHERE ARE YOU?

Where are your voices standing up for women in Iran 🇮🇷 right now?

Do you genuinely care about women’s rights or are you just keyboard warriors only interested in Twitter pile ons?"

Which prevented me retweeting. I don't identify as GC and I'm not a TRA so I don't have skin in the game. But bloody hell. I'm now going to check TRA accounts to see if they are tweeting on this issue.

Not sure where i want to go with this. But i did want to get that out. Because i can't really say it elsewhere. But bloody Norah. Must there always be (usually a man) sniping from the sidelines about how we're not doing feminism correctly (or acceptably).

And that, tbh, it is men from Iran and similar countries who should, in fact be making the most noise in support of these women?

how embarassing - i c/p her name from his first tweet only to find he has spelt it incorrectly. Her name is Mahsa Amini

There is another thread about this: I think OD's thoughts on this particular matter were tacked onto the end of his last mantrum.

Your comment deserves a more thoughtful reply. All I can say right now is 'why does he mention GC feminists specifically?' Feminists broadly would make more sense. But his throwing it out to the GC variety shows he understands very little of what he purports to be talking about.

oh sorry, i didn't see it. will be happy to c/p my comment in there and get this deleted. (off to look)

Please don't apologise! It's hard to know when something deserves a new thread - you can never tell if something is going to take off or not.

thank you. It's only about the 3rd thread I've ever started here (the others were about yoghurt) so i get nervous.

@Rightsraptor what was the other thread, I’d like to read it.
I haven’t seen it and I’ve been really suprised how little this has been talked about.

Rightsraptor · 27/09/2022 21:25

@YouAreNotBatman it's entitled 'What's going on with Omid Djamili' or however it's spelt.
