Quite an amusing little book and so funny that the French Gender Equality Ministry tried to have it banned.

I don't understand why it's funny? You couldn't have a similar title about any other protected characteristic. 'I Hate Ethnic Minorities' or 'I Hate Disabled People'. Confused

I'm sure various posters will be along shortly to justify why it's OK, though.

Have you read the book? Its very well written, reasoned and clear. If the book had just been I hate men without explaining itself, your statement would be fair.

Also I am from an ethnic minority and I am disabled. Not that thats relevant. In the seventies, white women said they hated men but didn't give a shit about disabled women or women from an ethnic background. All women, no matter their background will be able to relate to what is written.

I agree. It's a smashing wee book.

I like having it on my zoom shelf.

It provokes outrage, until they read it. (see PP)

Just downloaded it on Kindle.

Read the first few chapters.

If I were her husband I'd divorce her on the spot for the things she says about him in public.

Characteristic even

Sex is the protected characteristic, and there are two of them: female & male.

Yes, women need the protection more frequently but it protects men as well.

If "men" in this context were to be replaced with literally any other group of people on Earth there would be an outrage and the book would be banned.

And yes hate is still hate even if the person who hates thinks it is justified.

MargaritaPie I agree, there would be a thread on here talking about how terrible it is to have a book titled "I hate women" and even if someone explained that it provokes outrage until it's read and that's the whole point, they would say it's still passing a negative message to anyone who happens to just catch the title - and they would be right. If the book is so great, I'm sure it could've sold just as well without the inflammatory title.

Was it only white women that were asked this? How many were asked? Did they all give the same answer? Can you reference this source of information? Has the same question been asked of nonwhite women? If so did they say they didn't care about disabled women or women of different ethnicities?

I don't think the book should be banned, but it's a needlessly unpleasant title, and would put me off reading it.

It's not quite equivalent to 'I Hate Women' but certainly to 'I Hate White People' or 'I Hate People Without Disabilities'. I wouldn't read those either. There's analysing structural disadvantages and then there's just making flippant controversial statements for the sake of it. I'm not impressed by the latter.

Don’t agree with banning books but I personally wouldn't buy or read it as I find the title so unpleasant.

Report

FlowerTomb · 10/03/2022 10:10

@GreenWhiteViolet Out of interest, why don't you think it's equivalent to "I Hate Women"?

Report

SpiderVersed · 10/03/2022 12:05

@FlowerTomb - presumably because it's about the oppressor class, from the oppressed. So "I hate White People" or "I Hate The Able-Bodied" would be a better comparison.

Are you aware that the original title of the book, 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' was 'Men Who Hate Women'....

I lost i lost interest immediately after learning she has a husband. Can’t take her or the book seriously.
I will never understand why, specially feminist who trust any man and always think that the man/men in their lives a the good one’s.
This is exactly why we continue to be in this mess and nothing will ever change.

Lots of women have very good reasons to hate men. I'm kind of surprised that this isnt recognised on the feminist board

Strongly against sexism in all its forms. It is certainly more prevalent against women, but against men isn’t ok either. I haven’t read the book, the title would put me off

One is a work of fiction about killers and the other is an esay on feminism.
Not the same comparison.

👆👆👆 perfectly said. Not even sure how books like this are allowed! Dare it be asked what would happen if a book had the same title on woman ....
