A tiny little victory!

There have been many threads here where women have noted that their male partners are always listed first, on bank accounts, legal documents and even social things, and this happens even when the woman is putting up the bulk of the money or leads on the admin or whatever.

I am buying a house with my DP, who is undeniably male, and the contract documents arrived from our solicitors yesterday. They were addressed to FunnyLittleFloozie and DP , in that order and without titles! I have never seen this before, and certainly not from a law firm! Perhaps the tide is really turning now.

Why does it matter if your both making the application? Someone’s name will have to be first. How does your partner feel with his name being second?

on the electoral register the letter that comes through the post is addressed firstly to my adult son and then mine and that pisses me off because he’s my child. To sons name and my full name

The custom of putting men first when addressing a couple has lead to the unequal treatment of women as a class in lots of ways. It leads to discrimination against women as a class when a joint deed/application/account/etc. gets used as the basis for a benefit or entry on some other system that is only applied to one of the coule.

This being one of the feminist boards, it is not surprising that someone posts here about the possibility that this tendency to favour men may be changing.

As a property solicitor I have done this for years and encourage my team (both male and female) to do the same. I consider it a small step to redress the balance of centuries of men being put first.

In the days when building societies were demutualised, the share/ bonuses went to the first-named (usually the man) on any joint account, therefore discriminating against the second named person.

I draft contracts every day, and just do it in the order it is given. Funnily enough, most of the contracts I draft are female first.

I’m pleased to live in a time period and location where women are allowed to own things like houses.
