Female students are being injected now with date rape drugs in nightclubs

I won't post the Facebook post I saw because its on a forum but apparently there have been several reported incidents of students in Exeter nightclubs being injected in the back (not by people they are with) while out. The newspapers really need to get on this story and nightclubs who are reportedly batting back complaints saying that the women are just drunk need to deal with this criminality on their premises. We are not prey. Angry

For those that think this is an urban myth.
Makes my blood boil, my daughter is at Nottingham Uni and her house mates are petrified. What ever form 'spiking' takes via drinks or needles it is an abhorrent crime that is rife. Young people are posting and expressing their fear and what do we do - disbelieve them. The reason this crime is so under reported is because they cannot remember anything and are embarrassed, some may even feel shame and blame because they were on a night out drinking. I've written to her local MP and signed petitions etc etc, this has to have a light shone upon it .

Me too.
I'm disgusted at the amount on this thread dismissing this as an urban myth.
As a parent of a dd at Exeter I wish I had your confidence it's not really happening.

I heard of a woman who went to Sheffield for a business trip. She spends most of the evening in the hotel bar, drinking with a group of associates who are also staying at the hotel.

When she wakes up the next morning, she’s in the bathtub in her hotel room, with no top on. The tub is full of ice. There’s a note taped to the wall saying, “Call 999 if you want to live.” She calls 999 and the operator asks her to touch her back. She reaches behind herself and feels a long scar down her lower back.

Someone had done a crude surgery on her, removing her liver, which they (presumably) sold on the black market for a lot of money.

Funny kind of urban myth when there's been a police investigation and an arrest today

I’m not dismissing that there is a problem with date rape and drink spiking.

But I’m an dismissing stories like numbing wipes being used before injections, rings and other conjecture. The plausibility of such elaborate and difficult to carry out scenarios, plus the fact that every major city had had this rumour crop up in just a few days of each other means the likelihood of this being exactly what is happening is slim.

Are girls being date raped. Yes.
Is that a problem? Of course.
Is it playing out exactly as all the rumours are suggesting? Doubtful.

@Pam1962 You are eloquently describing the negative effects of fear-mongering on young women. There is no evidence whatsoever of anyone being injected with drugs. Some twat may have stuck a needle in clubbers for laughs or because of a fetish. That does not mean that women are at risk of being sedated by injection.

If you want to keep young women safe, campaign to protect them from acquaintance rape, not bogeymen.

This. We know its scary out there for women and girls already, no need to add to it with fake scare stories.

The BBC report says that a man has been arrested and that at least one young woman did have to be taken to hospital, in Nottingham. Stealth nightclub helping with CCTV footage.

It'll be interesting to see if any charges are made. I hope it is an urban myth.

Those who are dismissing this as a myth, shame on you! I don't usually come in forums like this but thought this was something that people need to know and I could maybe help by sharing this story! It seems like it's not the only one and the police are onto it... see news stories!

It may seem elaborate but the girl in question had had only a few drinks and could remember the club well though she'd never been there before, she's a very sensible young lady.

A scruffy woman in her mid 30s tried to get her away from her boyfriend outside the club and into a car. It's probably a very organised type of crime where the lady is being paid to find girls who will later be beaten/raped (the hospital said this so I'm not making it up).

Sorry that you didn't get the over-reaction you were hoping for. Maybe you should confine yourself to forums where users are less gullible?

Keeping women safe needs us to focus on the real threats to their safety. For female students, sadly, by far the greatest threat is male students. Ask your MP to take action on intimate partner violence and acquaintance rape: that would be far more likely to save a girl from sexual violence.

Heard the same Alloa/Stirling. Truly believe it's an urban myth. Does no harm to ensure being extra vigilant but I think its highly unlikely to be true in so many places.

Yep. Urban myth.

I think I'll hold fire till we hear whether toxicology reports do suggest an injectable substance, and then whether police reports suggest that the same substance is being used countrywide.

There could be a mix of things being assumed to combine into one story -- drinks being spiked, someone jabbing people 'for a laugh', even young people passing out from heat and drink and knackeredness.

At least the CCTV is actually being looked at.

If it weren't for the 'hype' I suspect no-one could be fucked to look.

I can’t even be arsed to argue with the people on here who for some reason think this can’t possibly be true. A friend of mine is part of an investigation after she got injected in the back in the heebiejeebies club in Liverpool, she’s had to have a HIV test. She spoke to an officer who was part of a similar investigation in Manchester after another girl got injected in the back with a muscle relaxant. Regardless of what’s in these needles, they are getting stuck into people.

Exactly, no needle stuck into a woman by a random bloke is 'harmless'.

The women will require toxicology tests and blood tests for HIV and hepatitis etc; they will be shocked and upset and may require counselling; they could be very ill as a consequence; they will either have to keep it quiet and deal with the stress or deal with the police and a judgemental world.

Imagine that in your first year of university studies, at the age of 18.

Again, one article with no concrete proof of anything actually happening (no toxicology reports or confirmation from hospitals, no-one arrested with needles, no charges) is not proof that this is not a myth.

One man was arrested under suspicion of possession of Class A and B drugs (not unusual) and released on bail - there is NO mention that he was in possession of needles.
