Casual and not so casual ageism is rife. The unrecognised toxin that nobody takes seriously.

We were only pretending to listen to a woman because she's attractive. Now she's not, we aren't.

Take heed young women, the sexism is still there, it's just hidden when they want to fuck you.

I know that for some reason misogyny isn't a crime (have I got that right?) but is age protected? By hate crime legislation?

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 22/07/2021 17:14

Yep, this is why younger women tend to be so "woke" and liberal. They have yet to realise how much men hate them.

I see it all the time on this site. Questions posted about what silly old parents do. These people really have no idea that they will be elderly one day and feel disenfranchised by the younger population. MN really turns a blind eye to casual ageism.

Report

Brefugee · 22/07/2021 21:16

Yes and when it's pointed out they get defensive. It is infuriating that MN tolerates so much of it. I'll keep reporting it and calling it out but it's tiresome.

I hope that when they're old and invisible they will see the error of their ways Grin

Well sure this isn't news is it?

In England as it's the country I know best.

This has always been s popular view.

Yes the other day I heard a couple of young DJs on the radio talking about the Olympics - one was male, one female . A female athlete was mentioned - she was famous when she was a teenager, she is now 44 and in the administration team. The way they spoke about her was sickening - like wow she is OLD now ! Can you imagine what she LOOKS LIKE !! At 44 she is old....and unattractive in their eyes . Shouldn't be seen apparently .

Seems it's OK to be ageist AND misogynistic if you're young and pretty. I noticed the comments because I'm an old woman, but younger listeners would just soak it up and not notice the meaning. Makes me mad.

Examples I've seen of generally men being unable to cope with the fact that women age. And that they don't always hide under a bush/ have loads of surgery etc to at least try to spare men's feelings-

Debbie Harry
Carrie fisher
The woman from moonlighting whose name I forget (sorry)

They should be forever preserved in aspic as they were when they were young and men fantasised.

To break the illusion is just cruel.

Not in England and Wales. It might be in Scotland - I’m not sure. In England and Wales, it’s race, religion, sexual orientation and transgender identity that are protected.

This is so true, and something I realised myself even though I'm not that old! When I was a teenager/ early twenties I thought I had many male friends who I would share ideas and opinions with. Only when I broke up with my boyfriend did I realised that they all tried to come on to me, as I was now available Angry. So not really friends at all, they were just waiting in the wings...

It's why I roll my eyes when I hear the old story of the middle management guy 'mentoring' the new young female employee. Of course he just wants to show her the ropes and make her feel welcome, like he would do to any other male employee...yeah right!

I heard a great quote from an older women about younger women's distain towards them - 'We've been you, but you have yet to be us'. Unfortunately it won't resonate with many younger women, as they think they will never be old and invisible.

When you look at how older women are vilified in society, you can kind of understand the fear of that. Nobody wants to be invisible and irrelevant. Maybe they think if they distance themselves from it, and align themselves with men they will be spared the ridicule.

Men who end relationships with women when the woman gets to around 40, then move on to a 20 something or early 30s woman, end that relationship when the second woman reaches 40, repeat.

I am sure we can think of examples.

Exactly! Why is it impossible for a man to watch one of the last three Star Wars films without bemoaning the loss of Carrie Fisher's youth! This happened yesterday (again) and when I pointed out that she looked like women of her age look, I got a load of rubbish about Luz Hurley Hmm

Carrie fisher was a fab woman.

She talked about how the star wars people pressurised her to lose weight for the reprise. She was like look. I'm not young. Whatever I do I'm not going to look like that.
They still pushed.

She was also very open about her mental health drugs issues etc. She was direct and didn't mince her words.

Worth looking up if people haven't.

Her mum dying the day after her was just. God.

I never know who her mum was (how did I not?!) and their relationship was complex. Her mum said before she died, I just want to be with Carrie. Sob.

Anyway an aside sorry have had cider!

Who from?

I'd say

Why does it matter?
Would you have rather a different actress? A 38 year old woman maybe? Early 40s? That's elderly by Hollywood terms.
What about Harrison ford? In the first film she was 19 he was 33. He's ok how he looks? You would rather what. That she was replaced because you don't approve of her looks in hey 50s.
Would he rather had Liz Hurley play the character? She's an actress. Seems like a good idea...

Alternatively just call him a sad little wanker :)

I know 3 men in real life who have

Met someone at uni
Said they didn't want kids yet
Then when they get to 33ish
Go off with a much younger woman and immediately have loads of children
Essentially stringing the ex along through the majority of her childbearing years.

Three! Men I knew quite well.

Utter selfish wankers.
