Sigh.

www.theguardian.com/money/2021/jul/15/two-thirds-of-working-mothers-lack-summer-childcare-uk-survey?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other

Nearly two-thirds of working mothers do not have enough childcare for school summer holidays, according to a poll that points to a deepening crisis in the UK.

What about working fathers...

It's annoying, isn't it?

I know that more families are headed by lone women then by men, and that (arguably) means that it's more of a women's issue for that factor only.

But it would be preferable of the headline used the more inclusive term 'families' - and then explained in the text why this is indirect discrimination because on current patterns women are a more affected group. '

Rather than sticking it in the headline, sending (to those who don't bother to read the whole article) a wrong signal that it's solely a womens issue

The survey was 92% women respondents, which is probably why the article is focussing on the specific issues faced disproportionately by women, because women still are disproportionately affected by child caring responsibilities. That's kind of the point. Men don't currently have the same issues. The changes being requested to resolve this for women would also benefit the currently very small number of men having the same issues.

I would love a paper to run this story with the working fathers headline. It made my day when I heard a sports report refer to the mens football, and separately a pundit point out that a tennis player, if he won this, would beat not just the mens record but the world record (held by a woman). This is equality. Men are not the default.

What would the story be for working fathers? That a survey has found that working fathers have not had to use all their annual leave for childcare, aren't bothered by the lack of holiday clubs as they won't be dealing with sorting out childcare themselves... etc etc.

The entire point of the article is that the issue of working and childcare is disproportionately affecting women. As RoseAndRose has said, the article should probably have had a better headline that focussed on the disproportionality specifically.
