Her's

I've recently started working with someone new who has her preferred pronouns on her email signature. Fine, her choice but she's included "her's" so every time I send her an email it comes up on spell checker because it's WRONG 😬

Tell her there should be no apostrophe.

Picking on someone's grammar makes you look a right tit.

Adding pronouns makes you look more of a tit, even more so if you can't get it right.

That's some fascinating feminist analysis there.

If she is a new colleague, it would be a kindness for someone (ideally her line manager, mentor or peer supporter) to point out the error. It is not a kindness to leave someone making a conspicuous mistake. But it should come from someone whose role is to coach, encourage or correct new staff.

@Orf1abc

Picking on someone's grammar makes you look a right tit.

Holy shit 😂

Does pointing out spelling errors in written reports in your job also make you "look like a right tit"?

I guess being kind also means not correcting errors of any kind Confused

If that's her's pronoun, that's her's pronoun.

Her’s’s surely?

Oh, sorry, you're right, toffee.

My apologies, I will educate myself and do better.

I read that as hers-is which sounds a bit Lord of the Rings to me...
I'd either ignore it or ask her manager if it's deliberate or a stray apostrophe. It could well be deliberate.

I think you will find this should be on the gender and sex debate board Wink

Although possibly pedants' corner would be a better home????

She's not technically a colleague, she's a supplier & I'm her customer so wouldn't feel comfortable saying anything unfortunately so I'll just tut silently to myself every time it pops up on spell check

In what context do you have to use 'her's' in an email to her?

@Sleepy22222

In what context do you have to use 'her's' in an email to her?

Never! It's on her signature so unless I add it to the dictionary it pops up every time I send an email to her

Wasn't there such a fierce debate in Private Eye about where the apostrophe went that they renamed it Pedantry Corner?

how come it's not being corrected by her spell check??

Report

ArabellaScott · 30/06/2021 20:38

Because her spellcheck has had diversity training. See 'grammarly v Mermaids, 2020'.

If picking on someone's grammar makes you look like a right tit, then picking on someone by telling them they look like a right tit because of picking on someone's grammar must make you look like a right tit too. In fact, imo it's far worse to pick on someone and tell them they look like a right tit because of the explicit intention to insult the person rather than to correct their grammar.

Good question, maybe she doesn't use it or has added it to dictionary thinking it was correct
