What do you think of her interview style on woman's hour?

I like her and I feel like she does a good job of holding people to account...but I also think that she can be unnessecarily combative, to the point where she doesn't listen to her interviewees. I'm trying to work out why she feels she has to do that?

Maybe I just miss Jane Sad

And I think Harper said there were 2 papers they was on

It was Harper's paper reporting self recorded performance times over a period ,in some cases of decades, of about 7 athletes all known to Harper, which formed the basis of the IOC decision . No comparison was ever done with female performance. The second report was the one discussed today where, to be quite blunt, Harper tried to deny their own research , which found lowering of hormone levels made little or no difference in performance and did not narrow significantly the gap between performances of male and female athletes.

Emma was too well prepared and didn't let Harper away with it.

Sorry posted first bit too soon

Today's show was good. Great interview with Harper, and then she quickly shifted gears and did a really fun interview about dancing. Very skillful

Look forward to listening.

She's not JG or JM but I do think she's clever. And I bet she reads up around her audience.

The issue is that the bbc have to have balance.

It will be interesting to see which guests Emma gets and which she doesn't. Eg when PL was on. Wasn't Emma .

Have to say, my mum never liked Jane Garvey. Which I don't understand, knowing mum.

But I get the impression she was all about Jenni, and Jane was the young upstart who popped up and did it differently to Jenni. Maybe I'll never adapt, or maybe I'll grow to like her.

(I do miss Jane and Jenni.)

thriftyhen · 23/06/2021 21:12

I thinks she's a good interviewer, but would be better on the Today programme. For an hour long programme, I would prefer to have two presenters on the show. I loved Jane Garvey's self deprecating approach. I feel Woman's Hour has got a little too serious and I find that part the way through I'm switching to Times Radio.

kofiban · 23/06/2021 21:17

I like her! I've been cheering her on in certain interviews, today's for instance and the one with Nadine Dorries, she asks what I want her to ask! Hate listening to an interview and feeling frustrated with the questions.

I could definitely do without the fluffy segments but I guess that's like any magaziney show.

TedImgoingmad · 23/06/2021 22:57

Compared to fellow presenter, Anita Rani, Emma Barnett is an intellectual giant. That's faint praise, by the way. Although she did pin down Joanna Harper today, so that made me dislike her a little less. She's been incredibly dismissive of women criticising the programme's direction. Which is basically towards showcasing men (Rani's item the other day on single fathers being a case in point).

Redyellowpink · 24/06/2021 07:01

I'm not a fan of Anita Rani, way to fluffy for me.

When Jane and Jeni were leaving, my DF thought the new presenter should be a man, he thought the programme was 'too much about women' Hmm

And I agree with the PP who said the domestic violence perpetrator shouldn't be on. I was suspicious about how reformed he truly was. He was still quite minimising of his abuse, saying he was never violent etc (meaning physically)

Yes someone was missing from that piece.

Cant think who 🤔

NeedNewKnees · 24/06/2021 17:59

I'm not quite sure about her, and I've definigtely dropped WH from my daily listens. However, she was excellent holding the disingenuous Harper to account.

Thecatonthemat · 25/06/2021 09:16

Think the programme has improved and I’d rather have combat active than self deprecating. Excellent items on lately but I do wish they would stop focusing on men in the other items. We know what men have to say. The interview with the woman from Ofsted was quite revealing and certain issues are definitely coming to the fore.

WarriorN · 25/06/2021 21:07

I hadn't seen this article about her re size of women's loos.

Interesting.

magicflange · 25/06/2021 21:29

I saw that too and thought good point! She's brilliant at breaking the stigma around periods.

bloopshoop · 15/07/2021 13:28

Oh god the discussion about bras today was soooooooo boring.

bloopshoop · 15/07/2021 13:30

She was very unchallenging and sympathetic to the influencer too.

SomeNameorOther · 16/07/2021 17:48

I really like her. I would call her forthright, rather than combative. She always seems to me to want to know the answer and will push, interrupt, if she's not getting it. I think that's fair enough. If you're asked a question, answer it, if it deserves further questioning and analysis , it'll get it but if it's obfuscation or distraction etc then I want you to shut up and get back to the question you were asked. You don't need to explain your answer before you give it, if you do then you're just excusing it.

Shedbuilder · 17/07/2021 14:23

@HollowTalk

I feel for her. She's stepping into a very popular programme with hugely popular presenters. I think we need to give her a chance.
Is she? I liked Jenni Murray, who asked really killer questions when they were needed, but Jane Garvey is a wet dishcloth. Her interviews with transgender activists were shockingly bad. She was tetchy with the informed, rational women who represented the women's side of things and fawned over the TRAs. I have absolutely no idea whether she's pro-women or not — which surely on Woman's Hour you need to be. And unfortunately her dull and pedestrian waffling on Fortunately hasn't changed my view of her.
