What a remarkable woman. Beggars belief that her daughter was ever made to share a room with this man...

That is every mother’s worst nightmare, It’s certainly mine. As you said @HecatesCatsInFancyHats what an absolutely remarkable woman. It’s a system wide open to terrible abuses. Now others are protected. I hope that other countries make a similar agreement with Australia. Heartbreaking that it took the murder of Mia and Tom to get things changed.

@RedthroatedCaracara
Are you suggesting it isn't a good thing that her campaigning has helped to achieve this if she hasn't achieved it for ALL young people from every country? What's your thinking here? I can't fault the woman personally.

It’s terrible, I live in Aus and even as a middle aged woman I would never want to go and work on one of these remote farms - I don’t think a lot of Europeans understand just how far you are from help if something goes wrong, and also, honestly, of some of the types of people who go from farm to farm, working on and off. It’s far from the romantic notion of Hugh Jackman and stoic taciturn but ultimately good hearted aussies. Obviously it’s not all like that and there are some amazing experiences to be had, but my kids have grown up here and even I would be wary of them heading off into the outback to work on farms.
The levels of alcoholism and domestic violence and general community violence is often prevalent in some of these remote communities.

Erm ... yes.

Nor can I. But this happened as part of a trade deal, the Aussies want to flog us cheap meat so they'll agree not to exploit our young people but carry on exploiting young people from other countries. Young women - and men (a man was killed trying to protect Amy) -will still be vulnerable.

It's akin to modern slavery, almost. Certainly a step forward and well done to that woman for her campaigning. Tragic.
I've often wondered about the Eastern Europeans that work on farms etc in the UK, living in tied accommodation etc, shoddy caravans etc. They seem vulnerable too.
