Out-dated camera work at Euro 2020...?

AIBU to think this: I enjoy football, especially these big international tournaments and the first couple of weeks are great - three matches each day & I usually try to catch a couple of them.

But I've noticed, if there is a break in play, an injury or something, the camera people always seem to pick-out young and attractive female fans and zoom in close....

Isn't this a bit 1970s/Page 3/Benny Hill and a bit out-of-date, in 2021?

I'm not blaming the BBC or ITV by-the-way, I believe they take a UEFA feed so it is not their fault - or am I just getting fed-up that I can remember Euro 1996, whilst most of these wee lassies were probably not even born then!?

P.S. Well done Scotland tonight, who showed great spirit and skill against England, to earn a point.

Pleased to reflect that almost all I have seen (not a lot, admittedly) has been pretty balanced. Men wearing jokey get-up seems to be a favourite. Vikings, tartan, etc. I’ve even seen some middle aged women!

A far cry from football tournaments past where ‘the fans’ were disproportionately represented by lissom young women with painted faces.

A similar one I’ve always noticed - but is less remarked on than this and a level results - is stories about elections in other countries. Always used to get my goat that the headline ‘Israelis / Colombians / Albanians go to the polls’ would be accompanied by a cliched image of a conventionally beautiful woman striding past a wall of election posters. Haven’t noticed that one recently, so perhaps it has finally had its day!

@Pinuporc

My DH watches loads of sport and this happens in tennis as well.
The French Open broadcasts actually do slow motion replays when the female players' skirts fly up!

@Grellbunt

Come on

It's obvious she is concerned about the message it sends to her daughters (and any sons too) - that it is normalised for women to show a lot more flesh than men and uncomfortable shoes

Patronising faux concern.

I think that poster has a very good point

I saw lots of topless kilted men when I was watching 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not presenting though

On the same lines, Simon Barnes (sports and nature writer) lost his job at the Times after writing, iirc, that he hoped that certain stories wouldn't be used as an excuse to publish photos of good-looking women.
Private Eye stated that the editor at the time was well-known for doing this so obviously took it as a dig.

(He could be a bit ott but one of his phrases, 'nothing is guaranteed in nature', stuck with me and has become my birdwatching watchword).

I guess Maya Jama either wants to dress how she does or has found that it helps her career, or both. She has faced a fair few complaints I believe about revealing outfits.

We're not divorced from the influence of the culture and biology (of sexual attraction and procreation drive) that we live in.

FemaleAndLearning · 19/06/2021 23:45

I didn't assume she had chosen her own outfit. I thought someone would've picked it for her. Fine if she picked it herself. Still though leggings and high heels!

nettie434 · 20/06/2021 08:18

I assume the UEFA feeds are being filmed by local crew but I don't know if that's true. I watched the England Scotland match and thought they included quite a good mix of spectators. I shall be looking more closely at the crowd shots in Italy Wales today!

I am really pleased we are seeing more women presenters and commentators in men's football. Alex Scott has had so much racist and sexist abuse from people who come nowhere near her in terms of experience of club and international football but finally the positive comments seem to be outweighing the negative ones. Emma Hayes (manager of Chelsea women) has also been praised for her tactical insights.

@KimikosNightmare

This sounds more like looking out for something to be outraged about. Certainly wasn't the case in the matches I've watched. One of the Netherlands matches had quite a lot of shots of children.
Same here.
BarbarianMum · 03/07/2021 20:25

I've heard this said but I cant say I've noticed it in the matches I've watched.

Clymene · 03/07/2021 21:29

I've noticed it

NiceGerbil · 04/07/2021 03:42

I've noticed it from the start OP.

TheBitterBoy · 04/07/2021 07:16

I've noticed it too, and given the percentage of women vs men attending the matches it is astonishing how much air time is given to women, particularly young attractive women, in the crowd. My DH and DS have also noticed and we have been playing 'pretty female fan in the crowd' bingo all the way through the tournament. I really thought this was one of those sexist tropes that had died out by now.

TheDrsDocMartens · 04/07/2021 07:23

Husband commented last night on ‘typical Italian crowd filming ‘ and filming young attractive women.

I've watched at least half of the matches and since this thread appeared have borne it in mind. Still not seeing.

The selection of crowd I have seen have been random of age, sex and physical attractiveness or the lack thereof. This still seems like a determination to find something to complain about.
