I'm glad Phil Neville has stepped down as I feel he was far too negative considering what was achieved in 2019.
Here's some info on the current pay gap. I was absolutely flawed by the Scottish team last world cup, not least because their stand out player worked part-time as a carer to make ends meet.

An update for football fans. Interesting it's still on track despite covid travel complications.

I think that is so sad Major. I heard somewhere that women’s football was much more prominent decades ago. Then men banned it as “unsuitable for women”. It is outrageous. I actually found a link about it.

The women’s game has come on massively in recent years, with better investment leading to training and coaching at a level that wasn’t available, and mature players now reaching their peak with a lifetime of better coaching and playing experience behind them.
The last World Cup was incredible, and brilliant, and gripping.
We watched some games in the pub, surrounded by football fan fellas, who got totally into it, knew the names and clubs of the players, and were talking footy talk with the women who were there to watch too.
It was really really wonderful.
Can’t wait for the next one.

I hope that will continue MotherOffCod.
My understanding is that in many jurisdictions, compensation (Covid) to players were based on ticket sales leading to a massive underfunding for girls and women. It was hard for them to receive funding, support and even to access training grounds in some places.

I think actually so far the men's game has been comparably less favorable and 'gripping' than the women's, so I am not sure what you are watching Fluff.

That's great. Nikita Parris and Lucy Bronze are really standout players IMO and I loved watching their dynamic and the rest of the team's in the last cup.

Thanks for that link. It was very interesting to read.
I enjoyed watching the Women's World Cup the last time. I'll certainly be tuning in again.

Currently exceptionally furious at football fans gathering in London for the England/Scotland match (and embarrassed, apologies on behalf of Scotland for the numpties making such a mess) so not feeling v well disposed towards the beautiful game right now.
Wonder if the women's matches/fans will be given such carte blanche to gather, watch and celebrate together? Somehow doubt it.

The new boss of the women's team is going to be Sarina Wiegman. She sounds excellent.

The great thing about the last World Cup was how much it made people rethink their attitude to women's football. It was also noticeable how many families came to the matches. That's a contrast with the England Scotland match mentioned by ArabellaScott. Apparently there is now a Covid spike in Scotland of young men (numpties is a better word)
There's much more media coverage of club football now too. A lot of this is due to Manchester City and Chelsea who have invested considerably in their women's teams. However, while differences in training and coaching facilities are being reduced, there are still huge pay differentials. We know from Grand Slam tennis that even with the same prize money, the huge differences in sponsorship mean that men still earn much more than women.

@Majorfluff
I'm not surprised, given how little investment it's received for decades compared to the men's game, of course it's going to be behind. As for entertaining, YMMV but I've seen some genuinely fun and exciting women's games and some appalling men's games.
Phil Neville should not have had the job. He got it purely on reputation.
DickKerrLadies · 25/06/2021 16:53
The World Cup games themselves are likely to be on terrestrial tv, but some of the qualifiers might be online only.
Less skilful? Overall, probably, but even in this country, given that the FA banned women from playing for a long time and the women's game has a fraction of the income available in the men's game I actually think they're doing pretty well and women's football IMO has come a long way in a relatively short time. Which has led to greater exposure which encourage more girls into playing and people into coaching and better sponsorship deals which leads to higher skill levels.
Less entertaining? This one I disagree with, unless by entertaining you mean the theatrics that some of the male players display when they get tackled but have suffered no injury. The women tend to get up and get on with the game which is the more entertaining part IMO.
I've also watched men's lower league football though, so I'm possibly more used to needing a wider definition of 'skilful'!
World cup? Can't wait!
DickKerrLadies · 25/06/2021 16:59
Phil Neville only getting the job on reputation? Partly, but tbf it's some reputation - part of one of the best teams in the world at the time and the 'class of 92', playing under one of the greatest managers of all time as well as being from a family who clearly love sport.
But given that he isn't even the most succesful coach of a women's team in his own family, I'll concede the point

The FA Player app is great for watching live league matches.
Not sure who is showing the world cup qualifying matches. The BBC website is useless but they usual show matches on iPlayer or the red button. They will show all matches of Euro 2021 next year.
I watched the 2019 tournament, we also had a thread going.
DuncinToffee · 30/06/2021 16:23
Women's Champions League matches will be streamed live on YouTube over the next four seasons as part of an "unprecedented" deal with DAZN.
For 2021-23, 61 games from the group stages onwards will be shown live and on demand on streaming platform DAZN and its YouTube channel.
For seasons 2023-25, 19 games including the final, will be available for free.
