Arlene Foster suing Dr Christian

Apparently he tweeted that she was having an affair (without any proof), and the way he put it was a spiteful little jibe about her being a “sanctity of marriage preaching woman” adding “it always comes back to bite them on the arse”
Now I understand he might have an issue with her as I think she was against same sex marriage. But this man always strikes me as an arrogant twat and a nasty piece of work.

I tried to post the link but I’m such a technophobe! it’s on BBC news website

Never thought I'd ever regard Arlene Foster as a shero, but well done that woman!

RedDogsBeg · 27/05/2021 12:06

Well someone's arse has been well and truly bitten and it isn't Arlene Foster's.

Reminds me of one of my favourite scenes from Wind in the Willows:
'To my mind,' observed the Chairman of the Bench of Magistrates cheerfully, 'the only difficulty that presents itself in this otherwise very clear case is, how we can possibly make it sufficiently hot for the incorrigible rogue and hardened ruffian whom we see cowering in the dock before us. Let me see: he has been found guilty, on the clearest evidence, first, of stealing a valuable motor-car; secondly, of driving to the public danger; and, thirdly, of gross impertinence to the rural police. Mr. Clerk, will you tell us, please, what is the very stiffest penalty we can impose for each of these offences? Without, of course, giving the prisoner the benefit of any doubt, because there isn't any.'

Nightbear · 27/05/2021 12:08

It was the correct legal decision but I can’t feel anything positive about Arlene Foster.

RedDogsBeg · 27/05/2021 12:09

I bet Adrian Harrop is doing that horrified shocked face he did during the Posie Parker segment on Sky hearing thisGrin.

BetterThanKleenex · 27/05/2021 12:14

I despise both, but would be glad for him to be dealt with properly for once. Vile man.

WeeBisom · 27/05/2021 12:15

I'm a bit of a libel nerd, and just caught up on this - this case was hopeless from the very beginning. If you defame someone, and you receive an offer to make amends take it!

He said that he was mentally ill: doesn't matter, libel is strict liability. Honestly believing the rumours to be true isn't good enough. He needs to actually prove they were true, on balance of probabilities. It has been established for years now that you can't just hand wave it away by saying 'twitter is light and frothy'. He said he didn't believe you could be sued for tweeting. But Twitter is just as public a publication as if he had made massive posters and put them in the town centre.

These are significant damages. I think Katie Hopkins had to pay Jack Monroe 28k, something like that? The judge must have been seriously unimpressed with him.

MrsBunHat · 27/05/2021 12:16

I may not agree with her politics but I do admire her strength and in this case I support her as a woman.

So often cases like this go nowhere or the man gets let off with "boys will be boys, he didn't mean it" type shite. I'm just so happy to see a man getting his comeuppance for being a misogynist arse, for once. And I admire her for taking him to court.

RedDogsBeg · 27/05/2021 12:19

He said he didn't believe you could be sued for tweeting.

Well that shows either a distinct lack of intelligence or an excess of disingenuousness and I know which option I favour.

AaronStampler · 27/05/2021 12:22

RedDogsBeg - or maybe both.

Melroses · 27/05/2021 12:24

Not a great fan of her politics, but that can be debated. People are allowed not to vote for her.

I am certainly not a fan of people who grub around for baseless smears and use their celebrity status to spread them around.

So, good outcome.

Beowulfa · 27/05/2021 12:30

The judge has got this all wrong. Dr Christian is off the telly, and everyone knows that what celebrities say online is always special, interesting and 100% accurate.

CovidCorvid · 27/05/2021 12:32

This has cheered me up no end.

Paralithic · 27/05/2021 12:35

Katie Hopkins had to pay Jack Monroe £24k in damages, but it was the costs that were a killer.

ArabellaScott · 27/05/2021 12:37

Glad to hear this, silly man.

ArabellaScott · 27/05/2021 12:40

'Mrs Foster's solicitor described the outcome as a complete vindication for the politician and a potential "watershed" for all women attacked on social media.'

This is interesting, too.

MadamBatty · 27/05/2021 12:40

My great aunt said to me many years ago if you want to attack a woman you attack her virtue (slag) or her looks, (ugly old bag). Good to see that you can’t make unfounded accusations against women purely because you want to.

RedDogsBeg · 27/05/2021 12:41

Jessen was thoroughly enjoying trashing a woman's reputation, bet he is not lolling now, perhaps others may take note.

userlotsanumbers · 27/05/2021 12:43

Great stuff! Arse well and truly bitten.

Abhannmor · 27/05/2021 12:44

Well done and fair play to Arlene Foster. From a republican socialist. This Jessen sounds quite despicable.

Chocolatepeanuts · 27/05/2021 12:50

She won!!! 125k in damages to be paid. Well done Arlene 👏

Chocolatepeanuts · 27/05/2021 12:51

Bit late sorry Grin

nauticant · 27/05/2021 13:02

After having had an excellent morning, this makes my day get even better. The arrogant arsehole could have resolved this at very little effort and very little cost simply by showing some humility.

Now off to twitter to see whether it'll be shocked silence or outrage that a woman successfully stood up to a misgynist.

CriticalCondition · 27/05/2021 13:04

It has long, long been established that you can be sued for tweeting.

Way back in 2013 Sally Bercow, wife of the then Speaker, was successfully sued by Lord McAlpine over a defamatory tweet she made which included an 'innocent face' emoji.

Anyone who uses Twitter, particularly if they are high profile (500+ followers was the number used by McAlpine's lawyers back then), should be aware that they can be sued and found liable in defamation for what they post.

NorthernIrishFeminist · 27/05/2021 13:04

Gobshite, I wouldn’t go up against Big Arlene Grin
