Ive started talking to myself

I am worried that I am loosing the plot.

I am unhappy and have a lot of worries which I am dealing with the best I can.

But recenlty I have started talking outloud to myself. Sometimes I hear myself do it, and sometimes my DS tells me that I am doing it.

It's usually a short 'I'm so tired' or 'No I dont want to do that'

I am embarrased about it. Does anyone have any experince ?

Good God I have entire conversations and have for 30 odd years. In the street sometimes. It may be weird but I was sane last time I checked.

What you are describing is totally normal - I think it’s more common to talk to yourself to some degree than not. Tell your son you are talking to the most interesting person you know.

It's a form of self regulation. I wouldn't worry too much about it. A lot of people do this and I wouldn't necessarily associate it with poor mental health.

I talk to myself ALL the time. Always have done. it's more common than you know.

Hi OP - when you start having arguments with yourself and losing - that's when you worry (68 and talking to myself since I can remember).

I used to do this quite a lot, especially when I was going through difficult times. I think it can be a really helpful thing to do. For me, it can really help to get things straight in my mind. Try not to worry.

I do this when my brain is especially busy, it’s like the internal monologue needs to come out to make room for other things. It’s normal.

It's normal isn't it? I do it all day long. At home and at work. Also have conversations in my head.

And full blown conversations with the cats.

Another one here who talks incessantly to herself. Especially useful when things are tricky. I always thought most people did it please don’t worry op

I find it really helps me understand my thoughts better, I have whole conversations.

I do it when I'm in the supermarket. Helps me focus and remember what I'm looking for. A bit embarrassing when other customers overhear, though.

I'm always muttering to myself. DH has often come into a room thinking I'm on the phone. My mum was the same.

Absolutely fine to do.

Me too. Harmless vocalising of thoughts is OK. Helpful in trains & buses to stop people sitting next to me ;-) I find it helpful to organise myself sometimes when doing some tasks, and sometimes it just comes out, like when I called out 'Jumping Jesus!' when I saw a mouse run under the fridge. DP came running! I always say, it's not when you talk to yourself you should worry, it's when you start answering back.

Another one who does it all the time. Sometimes when I'm lone working and bored to tears I start narrating what I'm doing as if I'm training someone. Like 'so when you load jobs onto the schedule board, you have to make sure that you book it with the right fitter. X doesn't do leveling, but Y does. Y only works on Tuesdays though so don't overload him with too many prep jobs, remember they take ages.'

I literally talk to myself non stop. You're not going crazy, you're getting expert advice.

I used to have a really horrible and stressful job and used to talk to myself on the drive home going through whole scenarios. I was trying not to dump it all on DH when I got home.

I do this, but more a mumbling rant than talking out loud. Usually when I'm going through a lot of work stress and I'm mumbling full-on and lengthy (hypothetical) conversations with colleagues! It's like my head can't keep it all
compartmentalised any more but it still needs an outlet.

DH and fam think it's amusing and I suppose it is, but I get a bit embarrassed about it.

If so I do it too. In fact I was doing it like mad when I was trying to sleep last night as I had had an unusually stressful day with lots more social interaction than I'm used to. Cue all the conversations and things I said popping into my head and me blurting out things like 'shut up', 'don't worry about it', 'yeah I know', 'oh god' etc. For me it's like Tourette's, although I do control it in company - if I'm very stressed and not alone I will make a nonsensical 'hmmmm' noise instead. I don't mean to do any of it, it's out my mouth before I know it, and when I'm in bed on my own it's like a dam opening.

I take it as a sign that I need to stop ruminating and start practicing mindfulness more. I do breathing exercises that I learned through the Insight Timer meditation app which diverts my thoughts to my breath, and it really helps.
