16:8 & nausea - any experiences?

I’ve been doing 16:8 for a few weeks now (gradually moved up from TRF 12 hours, to 13, 14 and then committed to the full 16 hours over a couple of weeks). Principally for the perimenopausal belly I’ve started to develop & sudden increase in % body fat.

But some days I seem to get extremely nauseous for about 20 minutes around 2 hours after waking.

I wake up feeling great. Begin my day, and then suddenly feel terrible. But then it passes.

I’m sure its a blood glucose dip, but how do I counter this without breaking my fast?

I drink green tea first thing, & water.

Do you have any suggestions? Or should I just ride it out since I (now) know it will pass.

tea was it for me.
for some reason it makes me feel queasy the way and timing you describe.
switched to coffee for that reason

Thank you. I don’t think it’s the tea, because I have the tea every day, but only feel the intense nausea on some days.

You should get used to it

I could not drink green without eating OP, it makes me very sick unless I have something in my stomach. Weak black tea or Earl Grey would be OK, coffee even better.

I find mint tea helps with nausea

HedgeWitchOfTheWest · 13/10/2025 21:34

Thanks folks.

i gave up with 16:8 as ended up with further issues with hormones, as well as finding it difficult to get enough protein in 2 meals. So I fast for only 13 hours, which seems to work better for me. I might not get all the benefits of fasting but it seems like a good compromise.

13 hours is better than no fasting and will benefit you. Only thing that occurred to me with the nausea was whether you are pre diabetic at all, as that can make it quite difficult starting 8/16. My partner had issues with nausea and low blood sugar when he tried it, usually during his morning walk. He went back to eating breakfast for about 6 months (being nuts, seeds and goats milk yoghurt..bleugh!) and has just gone on to 8/16 again about 8 weeks ago and no problems at all.
maybe you can try it again in a few months if you feel ready to, but it may just be it doesn’t suit you. What works is different for everyone. I feel hugely better in terms of energy levels as I am long post menopause so I don’t need to eat as much as did when younger. I don’t think it would have worked well for me in my 30’s though as I wouldn’t have had the time and energy to eat the diet I eat now.

Perhaps you could try a sauna.

@HedgeWitchOfTheWestHow is the fasting going? I am trying the 16:8 but finding I cannot fast for the whole time due to schedules at times. Did it work for you with the 13hrs?

HedgeWitchOfTheWest · 02/05/2026 15:49

I ended up with some wonky hormones and a 28 day bleed, so gave it up.

I’m not tracking any timings but generally stop eating after tea until breakfast. Probably a 12-13 hour fast most of the time.

Not sure if you're on HRT but I started to have some awful bleeding with perimenopause. Unpredictable and on some days so heavy it was horrendous. In the end because I was on HRT as well, I chose to get a Mirena. While insertion was deeply unpleasant (there's no point lying about that), once it's in, I wish I'd done it earlier. I had maybe a couple of weeks of the odd occasional pain as it settled but after that, my periods gradually stopped over about 2-3 months. What's good if you're on HRT is it then counts as the progesterone part of that so you don't need to take the tablets anymore also it's lower dose and localised if you had side effects from the tablets as I did.
