Not hungry, but can’t stop thinking about food when fasting!

This happens on my longer fasts and it’s annoying!

I’m currently about 13hrs in to a 36hr fast and all I can think about is eating!! But I’m not feeling hungry.

I can get to this point daily during a 15-17hr fast and not think anything of it.

So why can’t I switch my mind off food ?!

I'm doing OMAD and am not at all hungry. But food consumes my every thought, too!

In my case, I think it's boredom. Can you do something to keep yourself busy and distract yourself?

Unabletomitigate · 20/01/2024 09:57

Yes, to the boredom, try and keep busy.
Another tack is to give in. Sit down and write out what you are thinking. But end by bullet pointing why you are doing it, and what you are going to break your fast with. Getting it all down on paper gives your mind a bit of break.

I’m keeping myself busy… intact I’ve become much more efficient in getting stuff like housework done 🤣

It's a common reaction to denial - the thing that is being withheld becomes all consuming (not literally) in your thoughts.

I find this too I guess maybe it’s some inbuilt survival instinct! Being distracted helps me but not useful things like housework unfortunately.

Surely it's evolutionary? Anytime after about 36 hours fasted I start looking at recipes 😂 modern day equivalent to hunting?!

Pashazade · 21/01/2024 11:22

I try actively telling myself that it's ok and I am going to be eating again but not until x. Then I spend all evening browsing cookery books! 🤣🤣

Often find myself scrolling cooking videos on insta towards the end of a long fast.

Keeping busy and/or trying to nap.

I make sure my "last meal" is protein heavy and dense. Would probably start the fast as early as I can (4/5pm) so the first 24hrs go pretty quickly as mainly wind down and sleep.

Tiny bit of electrolyte salt in my water and coffee also helps during the fasting period.

Keeping busy is very important. I find it easier to longer fast during the week when working than over the weekend.

Good luck!
