Fasting / 5:2 diet

Milk in hot drinks?

Hi, I'm just getting started on 16:8. I'm essentially just skipping breakfast, and not snacking until lunchtime. I never snacked in the evening anyway.

So what I'm wondering is, can I still have milk in my morning tea? I usually drink tea all day, about 4 of which are caffeinated, the rest Rooibos, but all with a splash of milk. Is that okay?

I always saved part of my fasting day allowance for milk in my giant mugs of tea.
I do not function without caffeine !

When doing 16:8 (so eating lunch and supper)
the morning pint of tea is still essential !

It depends and it depends why you’re fasting. Some people will only drink water, but most feel black tea and coffee are fine for a clean fast. Some sources say less that 50 kcal doesn’t break a fasted state. If you are fasting for weight loss, it’s probably fine, if you are fasting for autophagy, I’d probably skip the milk.

Though I’m a hypocrite saying that as even thought that’s the right answer, I follow time restricted eating for health purposes and have a tea with milk every morning. I skipped milk for a trial and didn’t feel any difference whatsoever (other than being sad I didn’t have my tea!) so I’m happy with my dirty fasts.

I think it depends on who you speak to!
I have been doing 16-19 hour fasts since May (have lost 2 dress sizes). I still have a drop of skimmed milk in my tea during 'fast', so im aware its not a proper fast. My digestive system feels so much better (original reason for doing it). I read on here when I first started that its better to have milk in your tea then not be able to fast at all, and that some Dr's said less than 50 calories was OK and lots of other comments saying yes or no. For me it's helped with both the physical health and weight loss so I've accomplished my goal and its meant I've continued fasting as a way of life (not sure I would have done if I had to give up my morning tea). So I think what ever helps you accomplish your goal.

Intermittent fasting is, as the much missed BigchocFrenzy used to say
a Way of Eating
Its about teaching your body how it will get its nutrition for the next 40 years
to keep you at a happy weight

Therefore making the rules simpler and more relaxed but
sustainable
will pay off long term

Thank you, I like the sensible approach! It definitely makes sense for me to continue in the most sustainable way possible, i.e. thoroughly enjoying my morning teas with milk! ❤️
