Hello all, I lost about a stone earlier in the year but then put it all back on again through a period of stress and depression.

I'm mid 40s and have about 2.5 stone to lose. (Too scared to get on the scales until I've lost a bit lol!).

I'm thinking of doing OMAD starting tomorrow, although I will likely have to work up to it. Then allowing some more flexible weekend days where I can eat anything, and maybe even adding in some longer 36hr weekly fasts if I am able (I did this before and am very careful to do it safely and experienced btw).

I'm also trying to walk a minimum of 8k a day / drink a lot more water.

If anyone fancies joining it will be a relaxed support thread, also it's ok if people make mistakes if they slip up! We are human after all... I always find I am more accountable when I do it with other people.

Anyone up for joining?

@Ibloodymissgluten go for it! you deserve a treat!!! I adore chips!

walking with a two year old and buggy is no fun, it's a difficult age for that kind of thing! somehow walking super slowly with a kid alongside is actually more tiring than just walking fast as well, I don't get it.

Maybe you could do laps of the garden / street / house or something if you can't make it out far. Shame about the weather too.

I need to fall in love with health food again. Cooking is so dull. Beige carbs for the kids, cooking for just me otherwise, which is not a lot of fun. I think I need to find a new recipe once a week to spice things up a bit.

Hope you’ve had a good weekend, @liondreams

I had my fish and chips. It was amazing! Such a treat, although, my eyes are bigger than my stomach, my ds ended up finishing mine for me!

I’ve decided to ditch the carbs. I had chicken and green veg today, I didn’t have the potato or rice like I would usually have.

I always felt so much better doing low carb, so I’m going to see if the scales will shift.

It’s rained almost non stop here all weekend, so we stayed in and cracked on with DIY. I’ve got lost of steps in running up and down to the shed and up and down the ladder 😂

liondreams · 16/07/2023 20:06

OMG you deserved an amazing treat! And going low carb is a big step, but will probably work super well for you. Did you hear about carb confusion? Maybe once a week or something carbs are meant to be good because it confuses the body or something. Might be worth reading up on.

We did 12k steps today, was a tiring but fun day. Well done on your DIY exercise! it all counts!!

I'm also trying to stretch out time before meals each day, I'm not eating before 1pm - 2pm at the moment. This will stretch out a bit more each day until I am more used to it for longer periods. So I am getting there - super slowly!

Here's to a healthy week ahead for both of us!! 💖🍏

Hey hey, sorry for dropping below the radar.

Yup, those fish and chip cravings are almost irresistible - glad you enjoyed.

Strangely I don't often get cravings when low carbing and OMADing... but when they come, I seem to lose all will power.

So it's been a good 10 days - I think I have lost 5lbs. Part of me thinks it might just be my scales weighing differently in France (yup, I travel with them - it really helps! My DH thinks Im mad, but holidays have always been serious lapse-time for me in the past and this does seem to make a difference)... so won't know until Im home in a week.

But might just be true as I did a 48 hour fast and an intense day with just a 30 minute eating window.... easier as I had 3 days without DH, DD and friend.

Now trying to eat one main meal and one healthy snack.... I'm a big believer in low carb: when I indulge, it can so easily become a real roller coaster....

How's it looking for you at the mo??

@liondreams a new recipe a week sounds like a great idea!! So easy to get a bit in a rut...

Ibloodymissgluten · 18/07/2023 10:13

I’m on my 3rd day low carb omad. It’s okay for me. I do feel so much better eating low carb, I always have done.

I just find it more restrictive on top of an already medically restrictive diet. Rice and potatoes are my only vice in life!

I’ve cut them out now to see if the scales shift.

Ibloodymissgluten · 18/07/2023 11:28

Anyway, so I’ve eaten today. Any input would be great!

I had chicken cooked in indian spices and coconut oil with brocolli and cauliflower roasted with some cheddar cheese on top.

before that, I had my usual morning routine of a small hand full of almonds (about 12), and my usual olive oil and turmeric concoction, 2 tablespooons extra virgin olive oil, juice of a lemon, teaspoon of turmeric and a crack of black pepper.

Sometimes I have full fat greek yogurt with flaxseeds in too but I didn’t fancy any today.

My gastro consultant recommended it for inflammation, he said the region of India he comes from, it’s very popular and it’s really helped me. You get used to knocking it back like a shot!

Ibloodymissgluten · 18/07/2023 11:29

Consultant recommended the olive oil and turmeric - sorry, the structure of that didn’t make much sense.

liondreams · 18/07/2023 12:23

@Ibloodymissgluten 5lbs is amazing! Congratulations. and even if the amount is not exactly right even if it's in the ballpark that's fab!

Keep up the good work. I have to say olive oil with turmeric sounds a bit odd but I'll give anything a go once! Have you noticed a difference?

you're doing amazingly with the food etc.

I just need to be more organised.

I am managing my 8k steps a day ok, still trying to get that under control. I am wondering if the summer hols are a good opportunity for getting the food more undercontrol here. Doing all the school runs, clubs etc is bloody exhausting so if we are at home more (my DS is 10) I will have more time for cooking nice foods etc. Maybe I could even build up a freezerful of nice meals for when he goes back to school.

Keep up the good work.

Ah, that was @loveyouradvice with the 5lb. Not me! I’m not going to weigh myself until the weekend.

Yes, I’ve noticed a huge difference with the olive oil and turmeric. I’ve been taking it daily for a few months now.

8k steps a day is fantastic!

liondreams · 18/07/2023 13:31

@loveyouradvice and @Ibloodymissgluten i'm sorry for getting you mixed up! 5lbs is amazing @loveyouradvice and @Ibloodymissgluten you're still doing a great job!

@Ibloodymissgluten how much turmeric / olive oil do you take per day? What differences have you noticed to how it makes you feel? I'm intrigued!

I always had elevated inflammation markers. But unless they investigate every part of your body, without other symptoms, it’s hard to tell where the inflammation is. Although the consultant thought it was probably related to coeliac and going until I was 41 before being diagnosed. Anyway, my last bloods a couple of weeks ago, they were down to norma

It’s done good things for my skin too. My rosacea is almost gone. My stomach issues have gone (which is why the consultant said off the record, try it, people say it helps). I was skeptical at first but it’s amazing. You can get turmeric capsules, but doing OMAD, the olive oil is a good way of getting in the good fat and calories in (it’s 250 cals in 2 tablespoons of olive oil).

It’s supposed to be a good liver support too.

It’s 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice (I juice half a lemon), teaspoon of turmeric, a couple of cracks of black pepper from a grinder. You can add cayenne pepper too, it’s great for your blood, but
sadly, I noticed it was faring the rosacea, so I leave that out.

It’s not for everyone, but It makes me feel good.

Ibloodymissgluten · 20/07/2023 12:29

I’ve lost 2lb this week.

So yep, it’s bye bye carbs!

liondreams · 20/07/2023 12:55

@Ibloodymissgluten congrats! that's amazing. The olive oil thing sounds great in theory but not sure I could down two tablespoons, lol. Could be a bit much for me! I am so glad it's working for you.

I'm still working on my 8k steps a day rather than being 100% food oriented, I realise this is a bit of a cop out but once I have got it down I will be better. I will start properly OMADing next week as there is no school so I have more time (less school runs) to think about proper meal prep.

Keep up the good work people.

good morning all! how are you all doing? I'm managing 8k a day now. 14 day streak, not bad. it's small enough that I am able to get in all my steps but enough to make a physical difference! But takes more energy than I realised. I am charging round the house in the evening cleaning to get my steps in usually! (Bonus in that my house is cleaner). Also cooking better food! So small steps but getting there!!

OP posts:
Ibloodymissgluten · 25/07/2023 13:58

Hey @liondreams thats excellent work!

I’ve been doing low carb omad for ten days now. I forgot how good I fell not eating rice and potatoes (when I do eat them, I eat a lot of them, they are my vice!).

I’ve got a lot more energy now.

I weighed myself the other day and another 1lb gone. I’m 15stone 6lbs now which is my lightest since I started rapidly gaining weight ten years go. And by rapidly gaining weight, I mean I was living off pizza, cake and too much beer. That ten stone was hardly a mystery 🤣

I lost 6 stone 4 years ago and 15.6 was the weight I was the day I got a positive pregnancy test with dd. I was delighted as my BMI was 37 which meant I wasn’t on the 40+ BMI obesity pathway which my maternity hospital delightfully calls it!

I didn’t gain a pound while pregnant, I suffer from horrendous HG in my pregnancies and struggled to eat, so I weighed the same after I gave birth. Dd is 3 next month. I went back up to 17 stone at one point last year, so I’m glad to be back at that weight.

We are doing a long walk everyday now my middle child is off for the holidays. I’ve noticed that I can do a lot more. There’s quite a few steep inclines where I live and I am getting up them far faster and easier now.

I’ve also been reading about the whoosh effect with weightloss. How stubborn fat cells fill with water in the hope that they will store fat again and it can take months for them to get the hint and let go of the water. I’m hoping that’s why my loss has been slow.

My husband keeps telling me I look much slimmer and my clothes are getting looser.

liondreams · 26/07/2023 11:48

@Ibloodymissgluten sounds like you are making amazing progress! Well done! It's so hard when you have to fit everything in around children, in a way being off school makes it a bit easier (in some ways) to find time for walks and things.

I'm still not quite at the 100% healthy eating stage, but kept up my 8k steps a day. It doesn't sound much but it takes a lot of effort and I find myself trying to walk around the house to finish it in the evenings!! Once my son is off his activity club it will be easier to fit in during the day, as i can force him to walk with me (!). Not always easy to motivate him but if I can use a bribe e.g. computer time it might help. And maybe I can squeeze in some yoga too!

Next week will be doing some batch cooking to make nice dinners for the coming months and freezing them!

Yes I think water weight can take a little while to come off. I really noticed it when I was doing longer fasts e.g. 36hrs - took a few days after to drop it.

Keep up the amazing work!

Hi All, I'm new to this thread but wanted to join and share my experiences.
I started my keto journey the end of April 2023 after getting on the scale and being unhappy with my weight. I was having high blood pressure readings and generally felt unfit and d unhealthy in myself. I have four kids and want to be around for them as long as possible and as healthy as possible. Diabetes runs in my family and is something I would like to avoid if possible. I had previously followed the keto lifestyle back in 2019 for 30 days to see what it was like. The results were positive and great hence why I chose to do this again in April 2023.

I initially lost so much weight which was my body depleting its water stores and this had gradually turned into fat loss. I added daily walks into my schedule making sure I hit over 10,000 steps a day. I have experimented with 12, 24, 36, 48 and 72 hour fasts all which after a while I must say I enjoyed.
I also do Intermittent fasting where I finish my last meal at 6pm and will go around 20 hours until my last meal. ( This as just around school run hours as I didnt feel hungry in the mornings or early afternoons.) I have nearly almost ate OMAD which helps me alot.

Throughout my lifestyle change, I have had three occasions where I have eaten off course but have got straight back on the following day through fasting 24+ hours. I really enjoy following the ketogenic lifestyle and I know it is not for some people, it has worked really well for me and I love how I feel and look.

Overall I have lost just over 29lbs ( I work in kgs so it's 13.3kgs to be precise) and have increased energy levels and enjoy doing what I do to improve my health. I am currently at my goal weight but will continue to follow the keto lifestyle due to its benefits.

liondreams · 27/07/2023 12:53

@KetoWay2023 thank you for your input - welcome to the thread!! massive congrats on your weight loss! You sound like you have found the right programme for you. And 10k steps per day is amazing! I'm currently at 8k but hope to increase to 10k soon. I am finding I am feeling much better already.

The IF is a great idea, at the moment I am struggling not to eat too early as I find if I am tired my go-to is food, but I am stretching it to about 3pm at the moment.

Your weight loss is amazing! And your maintenance plan sounds sensible.

I would love to do keto but as I am a vegetarian it is more difficult (esp when also trying to feed a fussy vegetarian child!). Maybe I could do lower carb in general though or keto 2-3 days a week.

I have also given up alcohol recently. Although I didn't drink loads (2 x per week approx) I decided to quit after a horrid hangover and am feeling much better, although I will allow myself an occasional drink if am out with friends (a very rare occasion). I'm currently working on a big business project and have said I'm going to be sober until it's finished at least (a big motivator!). And hopefully want to keep going after. I do love an occasional drink but it's not worth the bad food binges after and the horrid headaches and weight gain!

Hi all,just found this thread.

I have been dabbling with IF for a few years and back on the OMAD wagon from this week.

I have actually found it easy this week, although I don’t fancy a 72 hour fast like some of you!

I drink black coffee and water when fasting and I don’t do Keto.

Going on holiday next week so I would like to continue with OMAD but will have to see how that goes,I know if I go back to lunch/dinner it will be harder when I get back.

I don’t weigh myself, maybe I will when I drop some dress sizes 😂 but if feel a lot leaner than a week ago. We have got scales but I don’t want to feel disheartened and from previous experience of fasting you can lose loads of inches but not much weight.

liondreams · 30/07/2023 11:02

welcome @ArianaGrande ! joining helps I think. Good luck with your holilday!

i'm keeping up with my 8k every day, and now doing no food before 1pm. My changes are being super slow, but I'm trying to make it sustainable like the atomic habits book.

I'm going to try full OMAD next week if I can. Eeek!

OP posts:
ArianaGrande · 30/07/2023 11:08

@liondreams thanks!

The more you do it the easier it gets. The first couple of days I was pretty ravenous as used to eating at 1ish (don’t eat breakfast so that was easy).

Yesterday 6pm came and I wasn’t hungry! If I hadn’t been working I would have carried on I think.

Sometimes when I struggle I put a crystal of salt under my tongue which helps.
