OMAD diet experiences

For the last week I've been doing the 16:8 diet, stuck to it religiously only having water and block coffee during fast.

I gained 2lb.

Now I'm looking into OMAD. I unintentionally did this when my mum passed around 8 years ago, I did lose a lot if weight, however not sure if this was due to eating one meal or due to stress.

I tend to be better at missing meals rather then making healthier meals (no time to cook) and generally eat my last meal between 17.00 - 17.30. I also suffer bad reflux and take medications, I want to come off my medications and heard fasting can help with this.

Does anyone have any experience with OMAD either good or bad?

Also the one meal you did have was it a specific meal, no cards, low fat, smaller etc?

I seem to remember when I did it before I had a KFC snack box for my one meal but feeling thats probably not good health wise.

My DH eats OMAD . He’s not over weight but is prone to gaining so by doing so he maintains a very healthy weight . He doesn’t struggle with it what so ever .

I’ve tried OMAD and initially I lost a lot of weight very quickly but then the weight loss just slowed to a near stop despite a significant calorie deficit as i was typically eating between 500 and 700 calories a day . Weight loss dropped to about 1/2 to 1lb a week . The days I ate nearer 1000 cals I would actually gain on the scales the next day . My DD ( medical student so neither a qualified or unqualified opinion if you see what I mean ) is adamant that I “ crashed my metabolism “ . When I increased how much food and how often I ate in a day for roughly the same calories , the weight loss kicked back in .

The one meal my DH has is usually high protein with a portion of rice or flat bread type thing . Mine tends to be dairy protein and veg and low or no carb . We are both practically sugar free too as neither of us have a sweet tooth .

@Footgoose apart from weoghtloss, did you feel any other health benifits, or did you find yourself tired and irritable?

Hi @Bigglebiggle . DH feels no irritability or adverse side affects what so ever . First 4 days I felt a bit drained and hollow if that makes sense , after that all fine . Back then I used to use strips to see if I was in ketosis and so long as I was I did felt ok.
I’m back on a calorie deficient diet again but using saxander this time. Once again I’ve noticed if I drop my calorie intake to below 800 which is very easy to do taking saxander then the weight loss slow

My DH does this and manages it fine, even if he runs / swims in the day. I struggle with it but might try it again maybe it gets easier with time.

I would find just having lunch and dinner much easier even if they were small meals

I was fine yesterday which was my forst day, starving today though and not sure how I'm going to manage until 5.

I did this last year and found it great for me - I find abstinence so much easier than moderation! I lost 2.5 stone in the end. It wasn't particularly fast but I just kept going and it worked.

I ate my one meal in the evening and just had a normal family dinner (part of the appeal was that my kids never knew I was dieting). During the day just water & tea - if very hungry I might have fruit at around 4pm to keep me going.

I don't think one week is long enough to test a new way of eating/diet. And I definitely would advise against weighing every day like a PP, weekly at most or you're just going to be picking up hormonal fluctuations etc

I do it occasionally in combination with 16:8. I find it massively helps with weight loss and don't find it hard to do. I tend to eat a big lunch and skip dinner and then I just need to skip breakfast the next day.

We are omad in my house. It takes a couple of weeks to get used to it. Lots of water.

Bigglebiggle · 31/05/2023 21:29

I found it difficult today, very short tempered, irritable and tired, and I'm only on day 2

DP did this. He was extremely irritable for the first few weeks then seemed to get into it. He lost loads of weight and now maintains by having a snack around 2 and then eating a normal dinner.

@Bigglebiggle . How’s it going ?
OMAD does suit everyone . My DH can do it because he has a job that isn’t easy to break for food so he just doesn’t think about it .
if you are struggling , you could well be starving yourself which isn’t the idea and you will stall your metabolism , ( I’m no expert ) or give in a binge . Nothing wrong with adding a few low cals snacks in to regulate your blood sugars either. I hope the hunger settles soon.
