Hopefully this works, never tried to attach a pic. before.
72 hours seems to be a really sweet spot, I found this chart very interesting.
Mindy Pelz also advocates for only attempting longer fasts at the right time in your monthly cycle - definitely not in the week running up to your period, but the first week of your cycle is a great time to do it.

I don't understand this chart. Why does weight loss only kick in at 30 hours? It seems to imply that the only benefit of shorter fasts (under 20 hours) is blood glucose yet there is quite alot of evdence to the contrary of the broader benefits of 16:8 and other short fasting patterns.

Shudacudawuda · 06/05/2023 09:40

Autophagy is also a benefit of shorter fasts. I think the key with shorter fasts is the regularity of them. Weight loss will kick in if you do short fasts regularly (you are naturally eating less, plus after a few short fasts you deplete your glucose stores sufficiently that the next one will be more beneficial iyswim).
But one short fast on it's own is unlikely to get you into the beneficial zone.
It's a good way of seeing that it's worth sticking to 16:8 even if at first you're not losing weight as fast as you might like - it should be more long term.
Then as you find fasting easier, which you do if you stick with it, it's worth considering throwing in a longer fast every now and again if you can, for the extra benefits.

Thank you. I have been doing 16:8 for a while but contemplating a longer fast, might give it a try but not sure I like the idea of going to bed hungry.

Shudacudawuda · 06/05/2023 13:05

I recently tried a fasting day where my eating window was in the morning (until 12 noon), so I went to bed fasting. I was worried I'd be hungry but wasn't at all, not even when I woke up in the morning.
If you've been fasting regularly you might find it easier than you think, but doing it that way might be a good way to start.
I've not gone longer than 20 hours yet... I'm working up to it!

That is a good idea, might give it a try in a couple of weeks. Just listened to Mindy's podcast and I am in the chocolate eating non fasting part of my cycle atm.

I think I'll have to start doing a 36 hour fast once every four days for weight loss as I cannot lose a gram despite doing all the right things. Low carb and calorie counting and walking miles and eating in a window of 17:7 and still I am a stone over bmi of 25. I can't believe the weight hasn't come off. I might try this week. I find it hard the first time when I haven't fasted for a while.

MistySkiesAreGone · 09/05/2023 00:50

I fast 8pm- 10am, sometimes i can go to 11am but any longer and I am struggling. I see that fits in with the glucose drop.

I've just compiled as 72 hr fast and I'm surprised how easy it was. I'm back now doing 20/4 as we are away on holiday for half term so a nice evening meal is a treat. I'm finding I just can't eat very much 🤷🏼‍♀️ have I done something wrong? My tastebuds are going mental l, I seem to have shrunk my stomach as my body just can't seem to consume the food. I thought I'd be eating everything in sight in that four hour window but it's quite the opposite!

I thought autophagy would continue at maximum beyond 3 days but it seems to drop?
