Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

Will I really get no effects of fasting if I stop eating at 10pm?

From looking at the research online it's very 'don't eat late at night'...

It's impossible for me as I often don't finish work til 9pm

So last couple of days I've fasted 10pm-2pm (16 hours) which is really easy for me

Is it pointless? Don't I still get the autophage whatsit?

There is no such thing as starvation mode.

I fast pretty much every day. We eat dinner late - at around 8:30, and I don’t eat before about 2-3pm the next day - so I easily manage 18 hours. I find it easy tbh and feel
very alert and focussed at work in those hours before I eat.

Does having a coffee with milk at, say, 7:30am break the fast?

Thanks for the podcast recommendation Zero - I've never listened to a podcast so this will be my first time! Grin

Tesco - I can't eat '3 square meals' a day as my maximum calorie capacity at any one time due to the size of my stomach is approximately 250 calories

I mean eat 3 times. I don’ mean big portions, just as much as feels good and satisfying.

I have listened to loads of podcasts on intermittent fasting. Also on circadian rhythms and how when you eat definitely makes a difference.

Dr Rangan Chattergee's 'Feel Better, Live More' podcast is great. He has had a few experts on talking about one, the other or both.

For die hards, Dr Andrew Huberman is the podcast de jour.

My dh is a massive fan of IM, eats vast amounts of food and is as lean as they come. He does it for the health benefits though.

I only fast weekends and holidays. I believe in the benefits health wise but don't need to lose weight so am not motivated on working days.

It depends and it depends why you’re fasting. Some people will only drink water, but most feel black tea and coffee are fine for a clean fast. Some sources say less that 50 kcal doesn’t break a fasted state. If you are fasting for weight loss, it’s probably fine, if you are fasting for autophagy, I’d probably skip the milk.

Though I’m a hypocrite saying that as even thought that’s the right answer, I follow time restricted eating for health purposes and have a tea with milk every morning. I didn’t feel any difference when I switched to no milk when doing the IF study and didn’t feel any difference whatsoever (other than being sad I didn’t have my tea!) so I’m happy with my dirty fasts. Someone who knows more than me will probably be along soon though!

Im definitely drinking tea with a splash of milk - usually get through 3 or 4 cups in the morning

It's too cold not too!

it's nothing to do with when you eat or don't eat
It depends what you eat in the 8hr window

However if you are getting home at 9, then dinner, them stopping eating then there is not much opportunity for you to overeat so it will probably work well (unless you have an office job and sit and eat biscuits from 2pm onwards)

You don't seem to be reading the OPs posts properly. They can only consume about 250 cal in a meal. Only eating 3 times a day for them would mean only 750 cal a day.

@LaurieFairyCake

Hi, it's been a couple of months now , so I just wondered how you were getting on??

LaurieFairyCake · 11/06/2023 22:24

Thanks for asking - it's AMAZING

I genuinely could cry with how good I feel!

I sleep really well (as I'm not digesting food or alcohol) - I've changed my food to finish as early as I can and if I finish by 8 then I start eating at 12 the next day

I've lost 4 pounds, sleep really well, have zero joint pain now, more energy during the day - I'm literally bouncing with energy

I'm NEVER hungry, just black coffee til about 12/1/2pm - I usually fast 16/17 hours - was busy the other day and easily did 19.

It's totally reset me - so happy

I have dinner at 6 so finish eating most nights at 7 and then I don’t tend to eat until 11 the next day. Been doing so my whole 35 years of life. I’m still a size 26 so no I don’t think it works.
