Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

Do you think you lose more with genuine fasting ie zero food 2 days a week or on the Fast800?

I'm just wondering... having just finished reading The Obesity Code, I'm rather attracted by fasting. I'm a long-term yoyo dieter entering the menopause so think my system has some serious resetting to do.

Has anyone combined them both?

Or if done both, which do you think works better and why?

Looking forward to hearing what you think!

Watching with interest as I was thinking of kickstarting the fast800 with two days of full fast (just water and black coffee). Not sure I'm brave enough though!

@loveyouradvice before you jump into Jason Fung's plan, you should check him up and you would see that he has a very low accuracy rate 31% meaning more than two third of what he says is pure BS.
He is also a bully who viciously attacks those who discredit him trying to make them lose their job as explained here www.biolayne.com/articles/research/its-not-calories-its-hormones-a-response-to-dr-jason-fung/ and also lists all the inaccuracies of the obesity code.

Yes of course, if you stop eating or eat very little, you will lose weight, but before you embark on a way of eating that has the potential to mess with your eating pattern, check your sources. Anyone who is more famous on the internet than in universities anyone who profits financially from their gospel, needs to be listened to with caution. Jason Fung is co owner of group/website "diet doctor", he is paid fees to promote his tea, and several other conflicts of interest,

Look for authors who actually have a chair in a university , who are university professors, who direct studies and clinical trials.

Nobody should jump into a fast without preparing for it. Remove all processed food, fried food, take away, savoury and sweet snack, and opt for real food, then after having researched it a bit better, and look at better sources , you can try.

I do intermittent fasting which helps. I also try to stick to a low carb diet. Don't always manage that though

Bluntness100 · 01/08/2021 07:30

I do low carb, I don’t think starving yourself for two days a week is in any way healthy and quite frankly it’s a bloody miserable way to live.

I do intermittent fasting, the occasional full fast and always low carb. I don't count calories but I watch protein and fat amounts as well as carbs.

Do not do a full fast without prep. It's not the way to kick start a diet as the side effects will be horrendous.

Your body will guide you if you cut carbs out first.

The health benefits of the occasional full fast are well documented. This article has a lot of clicky links: www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/health-benefits-fasting

Sunbelievable ...great reference, thanks - with fabulous links.

I'm happily doing 40 hour fasts at the moment and felt REALLY great the third time I did it - clear head, more energy.

I think the fact that I'm already eating pretty low carb, and been doing 16:8 for the last couple of years probably helps - as well as eating salt at regular intervals. So haven't had any side effects except for slight dizziness a few hours after I broke my fast. Looking forward to finding out more - it is a fascinating area!

@loveyouradvice you sound to be doing all the same things as me 😁

I am in the middle of a long fast now and feeling fabulous 🙌🏻

Sorry, my don't kick start a diet with a long fast comment was for @Mudandrain, as I have seen so many friends launch into it and feel like crap. For that reason, I don't tend to talk about fasting IRL.
