Can someone explain it to me in very basic terms please!

Meant to say I’m considering the 5:2 approach and wanted to know the difference.

Intermittent fasting is when you only eat between certain hours of the day, I only eat between 2pm and 6pm, I fast the rest of the time. When fasting you can only drink water, black tea or black coffee. Make sure you don't add any sweeteners.

The 5:2 approach means only eating 500 calories (or nothing) on 2 days of the week and eating normally the other 5.

babigailgabble · 18/01/2021 10:57

i eat whatever between 10am and 6pm and then just tea and water. it works very well for me. i don't go mad in my 'on' hours though. i usually have a good breakfast and a good dinner with a snack (shove some chocolate whilst hiding from my children) at some point.

babigailgabble · 18/01/2021 10:58

and occasionally i have a night off. it's very easy and i don't give myself a hard time about it at all

BaconAndAvocado · 18/01/2021 13:51

babigailgabble
Does that work for you?
I wouldn't eat outside those hours anyway.

Or are you eating very little between 10 and 6?

i eat as i normally would (relatively healthily but not restrictive in any way if i fancy something). i think what makes the difference for me is not snacking in the evening as that's when i get carried away.

babigailgabble · 18/01/2021 14:22

and yes if i have say 5/7 days like that per week I'm on good form. I'm not overweight and don't weigh myself or have any formal goals but if i keep to that loose structure my clothes fit better ,and then bigger and bigger whereas if i eat without limits i get more uncomfortable in my clothes etc

Fasting is a way in which to drop your insulin levels in your body (which stores fat), reduce inflammation, improve cholesterol and triglycerides, balance hormones, and while doing that access other energy sources - i.e. fat which helps with weight loss.

People do different levels of fasting for different reasons.

'Proper' fasting is 24 - 36 hours really as you want to instigate a process called autophagy which literally means "eat yourself". Which sounds gruesome, but it is a perfectly natural and very healthy process where the body renews it's cells, 'eating up' all the dead protein within cells, cleaning it out!

Lots of research coming out about how autophagy has incredible health benefits, even helpful in cancer treatments (the eating up of cancer would be beneficial alright!)
You would do his type of fasting mainly for the health benefits of autophagy.

Intermittent fasting is usually 18 hours fasting and 6 hours eating window. It helps do most of the things above, but most people do not get to autophagy point until around 17 hours so you don't tend to get those benefits if you do 18:6.

Low ultra processed food intake is key to making this manageable. You will get massive hunger cravings if you do it with processed crap, eat proper meals (meat and 2 veg type of food) and you will find it much easier.

There's a pretty good app called Fastic which explains the process your body is going through as you fast and what it is up to!

Thanks all. I'm going to give the 5:2 a go starting today.

Regarding the 2 fasting days, do they have to be consecutive?

OP posts:
JudyGemstone · 19/01/2021 22:40

No, they shouldn't be consecutive but can be one day apart

BaconAndAvocado · 19/01/2021 22:57

Thanks Judy

I’m going to try my first fast day tomorrow.

Got soup and rice cakes at the ready!

Good luck! I started yesterday but have done it before a few years back. Lots of herbal tea was helpful iirc!

BaconAndAvocado · 20/01/2021 09:21

Started today with a cup of berry tea and a slice of whole meal bread with a scraping of peanut butter. Think that’s 125 cals. 375 to go.

There are many different methods and protocols so don’t feel like you’ve ‘fallen off the wagon’.

Personally I never eat breakfast and now I’m not hungry for it so I would struggle to change up my fasting hours too much.
I generally eat between 4:30pm and 6:30pm but I’m also flexible if I need or want to be.

TowandaForever · 06/03/2021 18:29

@hamstersarse thankyou for posting. I found that really interesting.

lazylinguist · 09/03/2021 14:22

5:2 suits some people, but I find 16:8 much more doable. It's worth trying it if you don't get on with 5:2, OP. You said you don't eat outside of 10 and 6 anyway, but do you mean you literally don't eat anything or have and juice, fizzy drinks or milk in tea/coffee outside those times? Anything other than water, black or herbal tea or black coffee breaks your fast.
