Tried this for about two weeks and didn't lose any weight- how long is it before You'd notice a difference?

I've been doing this since the beginning of October, have lost 20lbs so far, lost 9lb in the first week and then 1-2lb a week after, are you calorie counting? I have1400 calories a day or less.

DianaT1969 · 04/12/2020 08:06

Take measurements and photos. It doesn't always show up on the scales. Inflammation goes down first. The health benefits are often noticeable before weighloss. Better sleep, more energy, elevated mood. If you were a yo-yo dieter, or more than 40lbs overweight, it's likely you are insulin resistant. A good book to read is Gin Stevens, Feast Fast Repeat. She recommends not weighing and not expecting weighloss for the first month. A Renpho type scale which measures body fat and muscle is good when doing 16/8, because human growth hormone (HGH) is released in larger quantities than normal after around hour 14.
It's worth doing 16/8 just for the health benefits and to kick insulin resistance/prevent metabolic disorder in my opinion.

In your 8 hours do you track or restrict what you eat or is it free for all.
I ate 400 to 800 kcals abd unsurprisingly lost 10lb in 2 weeks.

IsolaPribby · 06/12/2020 06:31

I am looking at trying this. Please can I ask @Flidina are you doing it everyday day or on intermittent days? I am guessing that the more frequently you do it the faster the results, but it has to be sustainable too.

Flidina · 06/12/2020 07:43

I've been doing this daily, initially started due to health issues, high blood pressure, pre diabetic. So far, found it sustainable and helped with sugar cravings etc as I only eat twice daily. I know some people only have about 800 calories a day, but I couldn't manage that, so just doing what works for me, although might have to change it up a bit if I plateau at some point.

picklemewalnuts · 06/12/2020 07:46

I do it every day. On its own, I don't think I saw any weight loss. However it makes staying within my diet easier. So after I'd been 16:8 a while, I started slimming world. I find it easier to stick to on 2 meals a day than three.

IsolaPribby · 06/12/2020 08:01

Thank you @Flidina
When do you start and finish your eating window? And what meals do you have?
I have done 5:2 in the past, and found what worked best for me was skipping the evening meal.

Flidina · 06/12/2020 17:16

My eating window is 12-8pm, but I usually eat my main meal around 5pm.I also try to limit carbs, but sometimes it's not so easy! I track my calories on my fitness pal, I sometimes have a treat meal but try not to over indulge too often.

ChocAuVin · 06/12/2020 17:23

Also have great success with 16:8, combined with limiting carbs. If I ever want something super carby, this way of eating allows me to blooming well have it and fully savour the indulgence. It has also helped me retrain my body and brain to see these things for what they are — treats, not daily occurrences.

Agree with PP that the real magic with this way of eating is in the health outcomes first and foremost, over time, you will see a reduction in weight and best of all maintenance, but the best thing is the improvements in other areas.

I love it. FWIW, I lost several stone switching to Intermittent Fasting several years ago and have not only kept it off but gradually lost a tiny bit more Smile

Antirrhinum · 06/12/2020 17:27

I've been losing weight ve-e-e-e-ry slowly since March, after a health-scare. I was losing less than a pound every week, sometimes less than 1/2lb, until I re-started tracking with MyFitnessPal a couple of weeks ago. I lost 2lb the first week. Then last week, I did 18/6 fasting and lost 3.8lb! I was stunned; I'm peri-menopausal and believed I'd never be able to lose much weight again. I then realised that whether I ate breakfast or not made no difference to how much I ate for lunch, so eating it was a waste of calories for me. It's meant that I can up my calories by about 100 a day and I should still see good weight-loss. Of course, all that will go to shit over Christmas Grin

IsolaPribby · 06/12/2020 18:15

Will it still work if I do it Monday to Thursday? I don't think I could stick to it over a weekend 😕

Antirrhinum · 06/12/2020 20:17

@IsolaPribby, so long as you're in a calorie deficit at the end of each week, then you should still lose weight. Just don't make up for it at the weekend.

IsolaPribby · 08/12/2020 19:28

Just wanting to know how hungry you got when you started? I'm on day 2, and feeling pretty hungry!

TheRogueApostrophe · 09/12/2020 09:02

I've been doing this since around September, I think, having put a lot of weight on over lockdown. When I first started I also restricted my calories using MFP to 1200 but I've stopped doing that so much now. I noticed a difference in my body shape quite quickly - maybe two weeks in. Quick enough so that I felt motivated to continue. I started at just over 10 stone and when I weighed myself earlier this week I was 9st 1lb, so I'm happy with that. I don't own scales so can only weigh myself when I take my dd swimming because they have scales in the changing room, so I'm not looking at numbers every day. I tend to go by my clothes more than weight, and I definitely feel more comfortable in them now than I did pre-fasting.

I just think it's a brilliant way of eating. I don't have a lot of motivation but for some reason I'm very good at not eating outside my window. I don't even to lick the peanut butter off my finger when I've made my dc breakfast. Before fasting I would have licked my finger and then stuck a spoon in to get a bit more! It's all those extra bits of calories that build up through the day that you eat without even realising you're eating that I'm benefitting from not consuming.

I don't seem to get too hungry, but I drink a few cups of camomile tea which probably staves off any hunger. When I've been working I've frequently gone over my time and have accidentally ended up doing an 18 hour fast instead of 16.
ListeningQuietly · 14/12/2020 16:38

restricting the number of hours during which you eat
has health benefits
but will not lead to weight loss
unless you have a calorie deficit across the week

catwithflowers · 14/12/2020 22:25

I find combining 16:8 with a fairly low carb diet is pretty successful in terms of weight loss. I also believe it has other benefits.
