Anybody been fasting throughout their fifties and feel that they are hacking the ageing process nicely?!

I'm fasting once a week for 36 hours (following protocols) and it's all fine. Just wondering is this often enough and long enough to have any autophagy benefits?

Really fascinated by autophagy but there isn't that much out there on line and would love to hear if anybody has a good decade or five years of fasting behind them.

I really recommend the new Fontana's book . I think I will buy a copy from amazon.
He recommends fasting but not a water fast and not longer than 24 hours (so not two consecutive days) . Once or twice a week, his advice is to eat only non starchy vegetable, as many as you want, with only a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil for each meal (so 2 in the 24 hours).

This is similar to what we do in France. When clothes feel tight, we cut two whole leeks, greens included, put them in a big pot, add water, cook for 1 hour, and then drink the broth, eat the leeks and nothing else for a day.

@KetoIFWinnie so you are more a cooked vegetables type of girl.
For cooked ones, try :

  • brussel sprouts : cut the bottom and in the bin, then cut in half and remove the hard bit at the base, un peel every leaf and place them in a bowl, add olive oil, salt and out in oven either on tray or any bakeware you have at high temperature (210 or more)
  • green beans : the secret is to cook them long enough and no salt in water
  • artichoke : Cut the stem , put in a pot of water and cook for an hour until you can peel the leaves. Prepare a vinaigrette with dijon mustard, olive oil, salt and lemon (I use an empty jam har, put the lid back on and shake) , you peel the leaves one at the time, dip it in the vinaigrette, and only eat the soft part, scraping it with your teeth. The closer you get to the heart, the more there is to eat.
  • spinach : boil them or defrost them, squeeze all the water out with your hand and make a hard ball. Chop with a knife back and forth, put oil in a pan, crushed garlic, and toss the spinach and move around fro 4-5 minutes
  • asparagus : I love them boiled or sauté
  • bok choy or any Asian broccoli. Wash. Cut lengthwise and put in a pan with 2 cm of water, soy sauce, high flame until water is evaporated, if needed some more water, until they are cooked. Do not put too much soy sauce at first, as you can alway add more but not remove.
  • red beets: I love them. Warning, your hands and everything will turn red once you wash them. Cut the tail and the leaves (these you can prepare as if spinach) until you only have the bulb, wash it ,no need to peel it, put in a pot with water for an hour for the big ones, less if smaller. Your fork should enter easily. Take and let cook. Cut into dices, add tomatoes cut into dices, oil, vinegar, salt , pepper, and I live red onion as well.
  • pumpkin ; peel and cut into chunks, on a baking tray or dish with peeled garlic, fresh rosemary, salt and oil. cook until brown , soft and yummy.

But experiment with raw

  • celery ; wash the stick, remove 2 cm at the base and cut all the leaves, but the stick lengthwise so it is no wider than 1 cm, then cut as thinly as you possibly can. But in a bowl, add salt and pepper, olive oil, a bit of red wine vinegar and the juice of a large orange squeezed. Leave aside for 15 min and enjoy
  • fennel. They come in male (round) and female (squared and long) . You need the round one if you eat it raw. Cut the green bits and bin. But the base and bin. Cut in half and half again. Think cut and again nice with orange or even pineapple.
  • tomato and cucumber salad, with spring onion and fresh parsley. Add rock salt, pepper , oil and vinegar, turn and mix, wait 5 min and enjoy. This one is nice with chickpeas.
  • rocket salad is nice on its own, or with cherry tomatoes.

I could go on for hours, so I'd better stop here before I stead with soups!

I've just ordered the Luigi Fontana book. It was not available on audible unfortunately. I can read! But i find I get a bit lazy now, if I have to actually, like, reeeeead, and turn the paaayges. I look forward to that book arriving though.

Thank you for the recipes! Yes, I prefer cooked vegetables. I'm not at all averse to a good salad if somebody else made it but I am looking around me and concluding that................. I could make myself a salad.

I'll try the raw Kale later with an avocado and some cherry tomatoes, they'll disguise it Grin i might love it! I can honestly say I've dodged Kale for 50 years so far.

Pak Choi I've had in restaurants and I really like that. Also love pumpkin. I have some tesco frozen chopped up butternut squash - might sub that in.

I like celery, didn't know there was male and female celery. Mind Blown. Like the peppery taste.

Obviously I'm not pro-keto forever but it did get me out of a rut where I was really a half-hearted vegetarian who was too lazy to prepare anything, so in reality, I ended up being a grainatarian. Living on chips, toast, porridge, cereals, pasta, few broccoli spears on the side. A processed meal with a few broccoli spears on the side. Pizza with cherry tomatoes ''on the side''.

I was lazy but always aware I should be eating better. So, glad to be out of the rut.

Am I eating the right type of Kale? It's called curly kale and it was like eating straw. So I didn't want to ruin my avocado, cucumber, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and cherry tomatoes by adding straw. I had to boil it for 4 minutes and then rinse it with cold water before i added it.

I can't imagine people eating this raw? It just seems inedible raw. It was ok boiled for 4 minutes though. Not lovely but it didn't ruin the salad.

WinnieLowCo · 26/07/2020 14:39

Wishing Id boiled the kale for another minute. Having spasms here. 😳😷🤢🤮

LeGrandBleu · 27/07/2020 05:34

Gosh, forget the kale and try endive or chicory. Sorry

WinnieLowCo · 27/07/2020 21:00

No, don't be sorry! I wanted to try it!
