16:8 and lemon water

So I read that I shouldn't be having lemon in my water during fast times. Apparently it breaks the fast? I normally have a couple of cups of warm water and lemon in the morning.

Advice from someone who knows better than my mindless googling please?!

According to Gin Stevens of Delay Don't Deny, and more recently Feast Fast Repeat, lemon, mint and other flavours stimulate insulin production.
Only black coffee,black tea, still and sparkling water are a clean fast. No milk, flavouring, sugar or artificial sweetener.

You shouldn’t put lemon in water anyway should you? I thought the acid was bad for your teeth.

This is interesting! I've found fasting isn't working for me any more, might try switching out my tea for green tea and black coffee.

Many people who join the Delay Don't Deny FB 'clean fast' group say that fasting was much harder when they had fruit or lemon in tea, before they knew to stop. I guess if it was constantly spiking insulin then it fueled hunger.

To an extreme, would brushing your teeth in the morning also spike insulin? Not that I'm going to give up that habit! Just curious.

OP, on that page the writer does say she brushes her teeth morning and evening which is fine because it's brief. I suspect also because it's necessary though! Maybe mouthwash would be a good solution. Not sure of the logic there though...

Regarding toothpaste, I wondered this and just read that the insulin response peaks at 4 mins after the body and saliva glands detect sweetness. It returns to baseline by 8-10 mins. The science of this response is called CPIR. So toothpaste may provoke a response, but it's too short to sabotage the response. Unlike digesting a mint tea or chewing gum which takes longer and is ingested.

I switched my tea for black coffee today and resisted mints until 7pm (when I was heading home and didn't want to kill husband with my breath) off the back of this thread. Longest I've gone without a cup of tea in about 15 years!

I confidently expect to be a kilo lighter tomorrow Grin
