Bone broth

Hello, does any one know if a cup of bone broth (home-made) would break a 16:8 fast? Thanks

What is bone broth? I’ve heard it a few times recently.

It's basically like stock I suppose, but cooked for longer to extract all the nutrients from the bones. I usually save the bones from a roast and then chuck a onion and a carrots in the slow cooker, with some apple cider vinegar (which helps the bones break down a bit) for at least 24 hours. I first read about the benefits of it here hemsleyandhemsley.com/recipe/bone-broth/ but I can't work out whether or not it would be breaking a fast.

I think technically anything with calories will be breaking your fast

Some people do have milk in tea/coffee etc during the fasting window so I suppose you could have broth although be mindful because sometimes it's actually quite high in calories per cup (if you add veg but also the fat/meat from the bones)
It's good for you though, you could have it as a meal instead if you want to incorporate it?

Thanks thenewaveragebear1983 I'll just continue having it later on in the day them - I was looking for something more interesting to have on my morning commute than black coffee or herbal tea :)

@CeibaTree I was reading The Obesity Code and he said that proper bone broth (eg as you stated in your posts above: homemade, slow boiled etc) can be used during a fasting period. He suggests 24, 48, and 36 hour fasts periodically but does 'allow' small amounts of milk in tea and coffee and bone broth during that time. Just thought I'd update the thread to correct my previous post

@thenewaveragebear1983 ah thank you for that. I've actually just downloaded The Obesity Code onto my Kindle :)

It's very interesting. I did a 48 hour fast from after Sunday dinner to dinner time Tuesday 8pm, with bone broth as my only meals and I lost 5lb in 2 days! I have been hungry today though but again I've managed to keep going just on my soup and will have dinner later

I can't see how it would inhibit weight loss

I'd think it depends if its the collagen/marrow/fat being rendered down or just the bone collagen? I'm not sure where you'd find the calories for either though, as the fat/marrow would obviously contain far more calories than just collagen which is mainly protein? I'm on keto and fast 16hrs too. I only have black coffee in that time, but have heard people allowing X amount of calories within that time and still classing it as a fast.

I just found this blog which explains why anything other than black coffee or herbal tea is a big no for successful fasting www.ginstephens.com/all-blog-posts/category/clean-fast
