Fasting and health benefits?

Does anyone fast for health benefits? Or have you noticed any since fasting? I've always been interested in this as when your body is not digesting food it has time to heal itself. I've skipped breakfast or dinner in the past, but have never tried a full day fast. Any tried this when having young kids to look after? I just don't think I could because they require a lot of energy.

Valter Longo (the Uni professor featured in the Horizon documentary) has written a book about the health benefits of fasting for several diseases. He also explains how long you should be fasting, how often and what to eat during his fasting mimicking diet.
It is not a total water fast.
I couldn't find the book in English, so bought it in Italian.

He also details a life diet, which I am following. Low sugar, low IGF, low methionine

I am doing it because I have a genetic condition similar to the BRCA gene, so I am tumour prone, both benign and cancer. My goal is to stay disease free.

I haven't done the 5 day program, because I am too slim. It would be dangerous for my heart to do so. I have done 48 hours. It wasn't difficult.
