Starving on the Blood Sugar Diet

This is Day One of the BSD for me, after a couple of "false starts." I'm three stone overweight and really need to get the weight off, for my health if nothing else.

I'm starving! I had a protein bar for breakfast then lunch was spinach, walnut and blue cheese salad. I'm at 800 calories and it's barely 5 o'clock!

Is it normal to be so, so hungry? Will I get used to it eventually? I really need this to work but I just don't think I can do it ☹️

Well the last couple of days have been better...and I've lost 3lbs since Sunday! Very pleased indeed!

Empire, perhaps you should stick to things you know about rather than posting shite. it's isn't shite though, it's just a different idea to the one you have, don't be so quick to dismiss something as shite simply because you believe otherwise. If losing weight slowly and by eating enough that you don't suffer headaches and lightheadness, not to mention hunger, is so bad then people, will be able to work that out. There are lots of ways to lose weight.

CiderwithBuda · 28/04/2017 14:32

There are indeed lots of ways to lose weight Empire but the OP was asking about the Blood Sugar Diet in particular.

Empireoftheclouds · 28/04/2017 17:09

There are indeed lots of ways to lose weight Empire but the OP was asking about the Blood Sugar Diet in particular.. Yes I know. That's why my response was about the BSD in particular. The later comments about different ways came because someone suggested losing weight slowly to try and minimise excess skin was shite. It was part of an ongoing 'conversation' if you like. But yes I did actually respond well regarding the BSD, I think the problem is I put a negative spin on it, are only positive replies acceptable?

Empireoftheclouds · 28/04/2017 17:10

*while regarding

TittyGolightly · 28/04/2017 18:13

It's a bit like me - a vegetarian that's never eaten steak - advising medium rare is better than well done.

You haven't done the BSD. I have. You are assuming things about it that you don't know.

Empireoftheclouds · 28/04/2017 18:46

Not exactly. I was saying that the physical problems the OP was experiencing were not a necessary part of weight loss.

alteredimage · 28/04/2017 19:13

Huh. My understanding is that it is perfectly normal to feel hungry on the first day of a diet. Whatever diet. After all you are eating less than you are used to. What is surprising is how quickly you can used to eating a lot less.

The whole point is that MM is challenging the orthodoxy that the only effective way to lose weight is slowly. He has clear guidance on follow up to avoid the weight coming back on. He challenges the orthodoxy that low-fat diets are necessary. And, importantly, the diet is aimed at those for whom excess weight, or rather excess fat, is causing health problems. The weight needs to go. This is an effective way of losing it.

Two weeks in I have lost 10 lbs, am back into my "thin" jeans, and sleeping really well. I have energy and have not experienced the metal fog that I can get after a carb heavy meal. I dont feel hungry.

However I am very bored and don't know if I can face another six weeks. If someone put a chocolate cake in front of me I might eat the whole thing. Not hunger, just greed. However I know, both that the idea is probably better than the reality and that I both want and need to lose the 2-3lbs a week that I feel can if I keep the diet up. Slow dieting has never worked for me. I am not disciplined nor patient enough, and post menopause it is very, very hard to shift anything. I feel that this diet is my best shot.

TittyGolightly · 28/04/2017 19:33

What is causing you to be bored? Have you got the recipe book? Some awesome recipes in it! I find the food really exciting - hers practically nothing white or beige!

Hulder · 28/04/2017 20:11

I'm not bored - I'm finding cooking really easy as I can make so much lovely fresh food. It works really well for me for family meals as they are normal meals, I just have a smaller, carb free portion. We are going mad for more and more veg. I'm not even that hungry any more.

What I am finding hard is the knowledge that most of my environment is in a conspiracy to keep me fat - most of the supermarket is off limits, go to a restaurant and struggle to find a choice, cakes and biscuits everywhere. There is just so much to tempt you back.

It makes you realise how carbs and sugary food are just totally around us and part of our culture.

TittyGolightly · 28/04/2017 20:16

Yep. The soup I took to work today was a bit elderly. I heated it and it smelled foul so I ditched it. Only options in works canteen were jacket spuds, chips, paninis, sandwiches, crisps, chocolate and cake. Salad bar bar was all rice, pasta and noodles. Ended up eating some nuts and a small bit of a dark chocolate Lindt bunny. Grin

TittyGolightly · 28/04/2017 20:17

I haven't struggled with eating out. I swap potatoes and bread for other things. Had a prawn cocktail starter made into a main course salad, etc.

Hulder · 28/04/2017 20:33

I think I just need to up my confidence and ask them to swap things on the dish or just not serve them am a wimp

But after the misery of week 1 this is really the easiest diet I've done and far and away the most effective.

TittyGolightly · 28/04/2017 20:45

I swapped spuds for halloumi last week.

I've always changed dishes though - had to ask for chicken and mushroom pasta without the chicken once!

KindDogsTail · 28/04/2017 21:21

Yes, that's true and it's no wonder people are getting trapped in sugar cycles because of it. But some places are getting the message:
Pret a manger - has nuts, fruit, & high protein small meals
M &S - small packets of nuts and now little pots of hard boiled egg like Pret a Manger
Cafe Nero has small packets of nuts
Even Greggs sometimes has nuts and now has some higher protein ready snacks (compared to their pasties etc)
If everyone wrote on it would help.
Easy Jet has some Food Doctor pots of lentils.

It's especially difficult for vegetarians to eat out.

TittyGolightly · 28/04/2017 21:33

There's an amazing, BSD friendly nourish bowl at m+s. It's cauli rice, walnut and red pepper dip, butternut squash, kale and sweet potato falafels. 400 cals of absolute heaven.

KindDogsTail · 28/04/2017 21:51

400 cals of absolute heaven
It does sound lovely,Titty but how much protein does it have? Are the walnuts enough? Vegetables have protein too I know, but do you know how much there is overall?

TittyGolightly · 28/04/2017 21:59

Taa dah

KindDogsTail · 28/04/2017 22:05

Thanks a lot for looking that up Titty. 16 is good. Well worth remembering to get that when there isn't time to cook.

TittyGolightly · 28/04/2017 22:07

It's fairly regular in my MFP. :)

alteredimage · 29/04/2017 07:52

Titty (if I may call you that), no real problem with the food I can eat. It was just the end of the week and I really felt like going out for a solid carb heavy meal, with a decent pud and washed down with some nice wine. Somehow a perfectly nice M&S salad, plus some new season peas, did not cut it. Even though this followed me sneaking into my favourite Spanish tapas bar for a late lunch and having a glorious fish soup.

We over eat for a reason, and I am programmed to associate that suger-rush carb high as a reward. Even though I know that if I were to tuck into a family size pack of Maltesers now, I would just feel sick.

Perhaps I should not catch up with a week's worth of MasterChef in one go. Gregg's enthusiasm (DH has a bit of a man-crush on Greg) got me tempted.

TittyGolightly · 29/04/2017 08:22

Ah. Lots of people have posted similarly about feeling like that. Some have done it and suffered really bad stomach cramps. That tends to stop the desire to do it again!
