5:2 newbie help

I've been doing some reading up on this 5:2 diet and find it intriguing. I've been doing weight watchers but wonder whether I could combine the two, have anyone tried this?

Also what does a fast day look like, what kind of things do you eat and when's the best time? Would you exercise on a fast day or is it too much?

Any advice would be helpful

I don't know who you'd combine 2 approaches - on 5:2 you should be eating around your maintenance calories for 5 days a week.

Typical fast day - black coffee for breakfast, miso soup for lunch, grilled fish and veg for dinner, or an omelette.

I can exercise on a fast day OK, but only once I'm well into the swing of it. And I wouldn't try to run a marathon.

Sorry but my understanding is that on non fast days you need to eat below your TDEE to shift weight?

bryonyelf · 23/02/2015 18:51

I excerise if I feel ok. Sometimes I feel like shit and just want to hide!

I don't know about combining, but my fd today has been

breakfast- cup of tea ( I measure 50ml slimmed milk at 18 cals and use it for three or four cups in a day)
snack- mug of chicken stock ( one cube is 22 cal - I use half a cube)
lunch- 30g smoked salmon, 15g baby spinach and a portobello mushroom grilled with 7g butter ( mfp shows 125 cal for the lot- it's the size of a starter not a meal but it keeps me going)
Snack- 100g raspberries or a plum 35 cals
Tea- homemade chicken and veg soup (195cals) with a 10cal jelly to finish.

It's tedious having to measure and weigh everything so exactly but worth it. I don't feel deprived, or tired. I always exercise in the morning if a fd, whether it be walking a few miles or the shred, I don't find it too hard, as long as I drink enough it's all good.

On NFDs (Non-Fast Days) you need to eat within or around TDEE.
Some folk with a lot to lose aim for the TDEE of their goal weight, which may be quite a bit lower, to speed things up.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/02/2015 08:07

On NFDs, you can use any method you wish - "normal" eating / low fat / low carb / WW / SW etc - to eat about TDEE

BigChocFrenzy · 24/02/2015 08:11

Once you are used to fasting, most folk can exercise on FDs for an hour or so. I exercise intensely: boxing, heavy weight1lifting, HIIT spin, Tabat etc without problems on FDs or NFDs, but for maximum 90 mins.

Thanks! Might give it a go next week! I'm thinking Sunday and Thursday as fast days as I'm pretty busy both days to keep me occupied. When I'm hungry my stomach rumbles really loud though which Is pretty embarrassing so I'll have to see how I go on!
