5:2 help please

I don't want to do the 'proper' 5:2, as I've been ill and need to be careful with what I'm eating. However, I would like to try having a couple of days a week of being much more careful about how much I'm eating. I've been very anaemic, so anything that helps with that will be good too.

Does anybody mind casting their eye over the couple of days of menus I'm starting to contemplate, and seeing if they could be refined/improved? I'm not bothered if they are over calorie-wise. Oh and I'm veggie.

Breakfasts - natural yoghurt and frozen berries / hard boiled egg & couple of oatcakes / banana and natural yoghurt

Lunches - homemade tsatziki with carrot and celery sticks / homemade hoummus (with v little oil) and vege sticks as before / piece of Spanish omelette / big leafy salad (including spinach) with a tiny bit of feta

Dinners - omelette and salad / stuffed peppers / chickpea curry with salad / Thai vegetable curry / veggie chilli and homemade salsa / lentil soup - I'd whack frozen spinach in most of those.

Any more ideas gratefully appreciated too, please.

OP
Come join the big thread as I'm not clear what you mean by "proper" 5:2
as the wonderful thing about 5:2 is that it is what you make it
and fits with your reasons

you say you are anaemic ; but there is NO meat, no fish and limited leafy green veg in there to deal with that ....

frozen spinach is a popeye myth

what are your aims?????

pop onto the big threads (which are the busy area) and you'll meet like minded folk Smile

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/08/2014 20:41

Thanks, Peace. The big threads are too long and scary!

I don't eat meat, and don't like fish. I just want one or two low calorie days a week whilst not necessarily doing the full on 500 or less thing. Would be eating plenty of pulses etc on the other days.

Just want to know if the kinds of things below would be a reasonable 'fasting-ish' sort of combination or not.

Sorry to hear you've been ill, Remus and I hope some form of 5:2 can help you recover.

If you are overweight, losing weight can help anaemia, but I would suggest 2 x 1000-cal fast days, as for BFers. Or 2x 1200 cals to start.

Healthy eating on as many days as possible, not just 2 days.
Obv try to cut out junk carbs too and only very moderate amounts of alcohol.

Your body absorbs iron better from meat, poultry or shellfish, but I have some veggie suggestions:

Iron-rich foods: spinach, eggs (well done on both), peanut butter, beans especially soy / kidney beans / chick peas, nuts, sesame seeds, broccoli, baked potato

To absorb iron better, you need Vit C accompaniments.
These are particularly good for anaemia, say as dessert: apple, tomatoes, pomegranates, peaches, dates, dried apricots.

Breakfast
. Add a few almonds / walnuts / sesame seeds to yoghurt for more iron
. Add tomatoes to egg for Vit C / iron absorption
. Replace berries and banana with above fruits, rather than just adding more fruit, to keep GI moderate.

Lunch & Supper
. To aid absorption, add small portion of above fruits, or bell peppers, tomatoes

Feel free to keep posting here if the main thread is too long, but we're a friendly, supportive bunch.

Thank you, Choc. That's v useful.

Am not overweight but have eaten like a glutton over the summer and my size 10 jeans are feeling rather tight, so that I'm in size 12s which are a bit loose!

Almonds a brilliant suggestion - I love them; also pomegranates. Will buy some of both tomorrow.

Thanks again, both of you. Thanks

Crossed posts, Peace.

I eat loads of pulses and vegetables generally - not so good with fruit though.

What to avoid
These hinder iron absorption, so try to cut them out until you and your iron levels are 100% again AussieDoc:
AVOID strong tea, red wine, coffee, cocoa, cranberries

Tip You & I are both omnivores - anything that runs slower than we do Grin
So, we consume plenty of bio-available iron without having to plan

slower more slowly Blush
