Fasting / 5:2 diet

The 5:2 thread number 41: Springing into March or marching into spring? Either way, more sunshine means easier fast days! Come and join us in getting healthier, the fast way.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.

  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.

  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the

much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND
were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: no limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: no rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).
  • BREASTFEEDERS: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: everybody needs enough sleep, or weight loss may be slowed.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Dogmatix34 that's a great loss congratulations! I would be delighted with that come the end of May (first day of 5:2 for me today!).

Good tip to stop eating at 7pm although not sure I will ever be able to follow it as evening snacks are my great pleasure

I haven't found today too hard really - I wonder why I haven't tried it before.

I'm just having my first calories of the day - a mug of Marigold veg bouillon. Only herbal tea and water until now. Feeling very tired though and have a headache. Never usually feel like this on a FD but then I usually chug tea with 1% fat milk. DD1 at nursery and DD2 napping upstairs so it's time for me to go outside and feed the horse! At least being busy means there's no time to eat Smile

Well done for your SV too, Dog, losing a stone this year.
Sounds like you have worked out a good routine for this WOL.

My Exercise on FDs
I train the same on FDs as NFDs, always HIIT and / or lifting.

Mon-Thur evenings: I have lunch, evening training and a post-training shake.
NFDs, I sometimes eat early tea too.

Sun morning: always fasted training, then a very late lunch.

My NFD lunches are 2000 cals+, works for me.

HIIT, boxing & lifting tend to stop hunger for me and most other folk, probably because these exercises are better at using fat stores for fuel.

More steady state activities like running or swimming can make you starving.
My only low intensity / steady state exercise is the nearly daily 4 x 12 min cycle to /from work and gym, which is too short to wake my appetite.

how did I find the body pump class?

Bloody hard going tbh, discovered my arms are still so shockingly weak...
I was shaking, plus when I go to the gym I only work arms or legs never both together so I found it tough, but empowering as I want to continue now to see improvement.

Oh no I've sat down, and yet I've got so much to do. Coffee break.

Runlike some FDs I feel like Im running on empty, like when your car has to run on the vapours of an empty tank, yet others I feel the force is strong and its like when you run in your dreams and you kind of fly?? I feel like that's when Im burning fat.

wombles now just calm down will you with your breast feeding and your metafit and ADF, and no breakfast and no snacking!!! And you call 2000 cals a binge? Grin Your body must be desperate, just relax it a bit. I think that's the whole point of ADF, is that you can be a lot more relaxed about food on NFDs. I admire your will power, I really do, but don't forget to enjoy your yummy treats too, especially while you're still bf.

Well done emma and errol.

Now then, this fish business Bigchoc asked me to re-post, will try to make more sense now that I've slept.

The documentary is on Russia Today news channel, or //RT.com, however cant link to it for copyright reasons its on live feed only. Do not watch while eating.

The farmed fish live in high numbers in a small amount of water, causing high pollution and disease. To combat this, chemicals are added. The chemicals remain in the flesh of the fish, and are considered toxic. Apparently, fat levels of farmed fish are much higher than natural, wild fish. This is believed to be a response to the toxic waters and poor diet.

Some studies were conducted on rats, some fed a normal rat diet, others were also given farmed salmon. They showed the unfortunate rat's in a dissected state, the control rats looked slim and healthy(but dead), the rats fed the farmed salmon had huge, obese bellies, you could clearly see the white blobs of fat on their organs. They were also considered to be diabetic. The difference is astonishing.

I've known for years that most salmon and trout are farmed, but did not realise that cod is now also farmed. I will be very careful about what fish I now eat, the researchers involved in the rat study were adamant they would no longer eat farmed fish. I missed the beginning of the show, its about the fish in sushi, which most of us would consider healthy...

Any way bigchoc, how you getting on with that hairdo?

Hi badger, I got the double mint in Sainsburys and noticed they do their own double mint version too. May be worth trying a bigger Sainsburys? I finally found butter mint tea today in Waitrose. Had been looking for ages and, like you, didn't want to order loads from Amazon in case didn't like it. It was nice but still think double mint is more refreshing. I have some caramel tea left over from day trip to France which is lovely too.

Hi everyone. I'm being naughty and having a v strong vodka and diet lemonade.

Fasted my arse off today! Quite proud. Called the gym. £26 per month but it's a year contract. It gives free access to the cinema, pool, health suites and obv gym at four different locations. Only worry is... What if I don't like it??? Can get monthly but it's 35pm plus 30 induction fee + admin. I don't have that. Could go to old gym at 29pm but no pool. Or a 24 hour gym that's 15.99 + 10 joining fee. Too much choice.

Re set point... The first few paragraphs are very interesting. I drifted off after that

I really do feel my body is happy at the weight it is. I'm not tho. I remember a lecture at UNi years ago where the lecturer said 'everyone has a point where their body gets fed up of being so fat and does what it can to get weight down'. That's kind of similar but exactly the opposite.

On the other hand, DP was chunky and decided to go to the gym. From looking at his family, I say they are not fat but naturally carry a little extra. DP now has a stupidly low body fat percentage and a metabolism of lightening. I genuinely believe he has retrained his body how to behave Grin

Talkinpeace, you mean from one gym or one 'plan' to another? If I go to my old gym I already have 30 quid payment there. It can either be my first month back or my cancellation fee. That's also DPs gym. Not that we'd ever have chance to go together due to DD. Hmm

TBH with gyms it comes down to how many pounds it will cost per visit.
My gym is eye wateringly expensive, but comes in at £2 a visit (per swim / class) which is OK

Dakota
I've never done consecutive fasts.
I'd just have lots of fluids - tea, milk, yogurt, soup and keep the sugar and carbs down and then you'll get a happy number
