Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

Just started the 5:2 today. I think I'll manage?

I've decided I need to do the 500 cals days when not at work. My work can be quite demanding as I'm a support worker so can go from sitting around to walking 7 miles (some hilly). I can rest more at home ignore chores. Wink

I've only started today and have had a very small breakfast of red berries special K, semi skimmed milk. For lunch I've had salad with mussels, no dressing just lemon and a pinch of salt. I've had black coffee with sweetener and water to drink.

I think I have 100 cals left so may have some homemade soup later? Only made from veg though. No fat.

I've had a good walk today with the dog but only a couple of miles. Some of it hilly. I haven't overdone it though.

I think I can cope with this lifestyle change. I love veg and salads. I can adapt the meals for dcs and dp wants to lose weight too so he may do the 5:2 but probably on different days. He has a sedentary job so said he'll do it on work days.

How's everyone else getting on? A few people I know have lost amazing amounts of weight but look great with it. Not lethargic like some do when trying to lose weight.

Definitely gets easier as time goes by. I actually (secretly) quite enjoy my fast days now. There's something quite satisfying about feeling 'empty' IYKWIM.
My standard fast day is to have only black coffee and herbal tea until dinner, and then have prawns (cooked with chilli, garlic and lemon) in a massive salad - leaves, tomatoes, peppers, cucumber etc. Very healthy, and about 200 cals all told. I then have a frozen low-fat yoghurt and maybe some strawberries.
The thing that made the difference for me was feeling full at the end of the day - having a big meal made me feel much better at bed time, although I hadn't eaten during the day.
Good luck with it - I've reached my desired weight and am very happy maintaining now.

I've struggled - managed for a few weeks but found the last couple too hard and cracked. Mainly because I have lost sod all weight - 0.4kg in a month! Why on earth have I been starving myself

Juniperdewdropofbrandy · 15/09/2013 00:05

Yes EATmum ikwym about the empty feeling. Glad to hear you reached your goal Smile

Sorry to hear it wasn't so good for you feelthis.

Very few people find themselves 'starving' on this WOL. Personally, after doing this for 18 months, the only time I felt hungry was on the first couple of fast days. Once I got into a routine I never felt deprived - not on a fast day and certainly not on a NFD.

Currently I'm maintaining on 6:1 and I eat as few calories on my fast day as I can get away with - a low calorie veg curry with broccoli which came in at 140 calories last week, and I felt stuffed after eating that!

Just to emphasise - this isn't a diet, the weight loss is a side effect. I'm in it for the health benefits - which are many - as is Tip and many others on the Maintenance threads.

Check out the links in the OP of the main threads - all you need to keep you motivated to continue can be found there.

I myself have never felt so fit - or so in control of my weight!

Juniperdewdropofbrandy · 15/09/2013 23:48

Thanks Breadandwine. I'll admit I'm more interested in the health benefits.

Fast day 2 today. 2 quorn sausages for breakfast, and salade nicoise for tea (egg, tuna, runner beans, tomatoes, handful of olives). I also had 2 milky coffees, and realise that I've been having far more milk than I thought, so will have to drink it black on fast days in future.

I feel alright now! Not hungry! (although this afternoon was difficult).

Juniperdewdropofbrandy · 16/09/2013 22:01

Well done stubborn. Your food sounds lovely. Better than beetroot Grin

My fast day today too. I had a small bowl of special K berries and bit of milk. Cup of coffee. A nectarine. Ready meal tonight of 270 cals and did cabbage leeks and carrots with it. A cup of tea just not and water. I'm fine and not hungry either.

Someone saw me tonight who I haven't seen for a few months. He was shocked at my weight loss. I've already lost weight because of my new job. Around a stone but it is obvious as I only have another one to lose.

I meant tea just now. I think it's bed time? 13 hour shift again tomorrow and I did 2 over the weekend. At least it's burning the cals Wink

Oh and AF's due but my stomach isn't massive! Usually I look 6 months gone around this time.
