BetsyBell · 23/06/2013 15:54

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads:
most recent, one before that, another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnichts for putting together all the info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Well six months in and I have reached the half way mark. 2 stones lost, 2 more to go. Slow but steady loss of a lb most weeks which I think is brilliant as I do no exercise and eat whatever I like on non fast days. I don't often post but read the messages most days and gain great support and encouragement from that. So many thanks to you all and good luck with the fasting :)

EagleRiderDirk · 01/07/2013 18:20

tomorrow love the name

JB30 · 01/07/2013 18:27

I have completed my eating for the day, 499 cals! I did good but I wasted nearly 60 cals in a breakfast biscuit at lunch. What a waste! Discovered m&s 1 person meals, cottage pie/chicken supreme, only around 210-220 cals. Absolutely no doubt you could make them yourself but it was soo handy with some sweet corn (pls let it work it's magic) and mange tout, 273 cals for a pretty tasty dinner. I also did a 3 mile jog before dinner. If I was tired before I'm flipping wrecked now. But my humour better after it, so it's all good in the hood.
Bacon & eggs for breakfast, I cannot wait! Nearly there fellow Monday fasters, m'wah!

Itsaboatjack · 01/07/2013 18:40

Well I managed to fast today after all. We managed to get the meeting wrapped up quicker than expected so it didn't turn into a working lunch, I'd not had any breakfast anyway so after a bit of umming and arring I thought I may as well go for it and get the first fast of the week out the way.

Going to talk myself into a run in the morning too hopefully.

MissUnicorn · 01/07/2013 18:53

Bssh Have you eaten yet?

Congrats aka! You ate less chocolate than usual so that is to be applauded! Thanks

QueenB step away from the chocolate, you can have it first thing in the morning!
Congrats Tomorrow what a fab bit of motivation.

JB30 I'm drooling at the thought of bacon and eggs. I'm going to have eggs scrambled in butter on crumpets.

I've finished eating for the day too. 491 cals. I feel I've wasted some calories. I had brazil and cashew nuts with my lunch, but they didn't leave me as full as I thought they would. On Thursday I'm going to try out an omelette instead.

I also had a biscuit with my dinner, but again, I could've had more prawns instead as I'm still a bit peckish. All part of the learning process I guess.

Am popping over to see a friend tonight, and I've told her in advance that I'll be having tea and not our usual bottle glass of wine. I'm even going to bring my own herbal ones to be on the safe side!

Come on Monday fasters only a few hours left to go out Wink

peplum41 · 01/07/2013 19:05

Hello all, slept my night shift off, then took dog out for an hour in the lovely sun. Fast day tea of new convent garden minestrone soup mixed in with some leftover curry ( they probably aren't the best bed fellows) should bring me in under 400. Then some ironing, maybe tv and then bed. We are nearly there! Mwah Mwah JB.

Mocnk, I love having old threaders on here. You bring that experienced nuance to the thread. Maybe you should stop a while, even when you're back in maintenance. Hows your return to fasting going?

Stay with us itsa, a surprise fast, seems easier somehow!

aka I thought you'd gone cold turkey!! Are you staying with 5:2? I've decided that rather than foregoing the brown stuff for a month, I'm going to allow it when:

I've stuck to 500 on a fast day(not on the fast day obviously),

when I've been the gym, or done an exercise DVD,

when its a Wine free day. That's the plan for a month.

tomorrowweeat You make it sound so simple! and its working, have you had no plateau issues?

bssh are you getting a new kitchen put in? Ooh.

brambles yeah NSV high 5!! Size 12, a long way away. Im currently a size 15, if they did them.

mamageekchic · 01/07/2013 19:09

My first fast day today, I had just water and coffee until 1.30 then had 30g of porridge with skimmed milk and some raspberries. I felt a bit light headed around 5pm, succumbed to one square of chocolate which took the edge off (probably psychological) then had some grilled chicken breast and veg. Should have enough calories left for a yoghurt or ice lolly later. Feeling pleased with myself :)

babysaurus · 01/07/2013 19:24

Putting DS to bed (I wait with him till he's asleep, hence I'm typing this on my phone) and am fighting the urge to have wine - there's a third of a bottle open in the fridge, you see, and its calling me! Tomorrow, tomorrow!!
These posts are really helping though, thank you!
Other than urge for wine, I feel ok. Hungry obviously but not too horrendous. Looking forward to a light but tasty dinner to keep me on track.

Chipstick10 · 01/07/2013 19:32

I have never found fasting easy, especially my first fast of the week on Mondays. Having said that, last week I struggled so badly I nearly broke it, yet today I have managed well. I wonder if its anything to do with the foods you eat or don't eat the day before.

babysaurus · 01/07/2013 19:32

Hmm, possibly Chipstick

akarucker · 01/07/2013 19:34

peplum yes I'm sticking with 5:2. ADF was great to get me started, but became too much and I consequently fell off the wagon and it went terribly pear shaped. I can see that 5:2 is going to be much slower, but I don't care, as now I have the weight to lose after I fell off the wagon + all my original weight, so no sense in doing something I can't keep up.

As for the choc, I tried going cold turkey a couple of months ago. Not happy!! June's experiment was whether I could get by without buying any, but still allowing myself to eat it if it was 'a gift'! Sounds silly, I know, but seriously, I'm such an addict that this minor accomplishment was quite something! This way, I was able to still eat it, but didn't allow myself the freedom to overeat on it like I usually would.

Sad that dinner is done today. Still hungry. Early night with a book I think. Got in a massive punnet of strawberries to have for breakfast in the morning. might pour a little of the double cream I bought, over them

BsshBossh · 01/07/2013 19:44

Still no food has passed these lips. It's quite easy fasting when you have no kitchen (yes peplum new kitchen being installed). It's so dusty, I couldn't bring myself to eat even if I wanted to. But in an hour or so I'll heat up a calorie-counted ready meal - chicken korma and rice (well, it had to be a curry on a FD!). Have no clue where DH packed my 10 cal jellies so it will have to be a 0% fruit yoghurt (bleugh! usually only eat full fat).

Tomorrow's NFD will be interesting without a kitchen.

peplum41 · 01/07/2013 19:54

aka oh I see, well if you managed that well done. I was disappointed when dinner finished, you look forward to it all day! I looked in the fridge for a couple of raspberries, but dh had snaffled them. I had a few blueberries, feel happier now. Sometimes this is the hard bit, keeping good until bedtime.

chipstick yes I agree, the day before you fast can affect the fast, depending on what's consumed.

babysaurus, just hang on, that wine will taste much better tomorrow when you've earned it. Think of all your hard work today, have an early night, bet you're shattered.

peplum41 · 01/07/2013 20:00

bsshbossh what's your new kitchen going to be like and how long until you can make your first curry in it?
You probably will be dusty for weeks after the builders have left, it seems to reappear each time you wipe up. Another job to keep busy on a fast day.

peplum41 · 01/07/2013 20:04

Meant to say, well done mamageekchic, I just couldn't remember your name! Sounds a good first fast.

Tommy · 01/07/2013 20:05

really hungry today!
I have 40 cals left - what shall I eat?!

Dotty342kids · 01/07/2013 20:11

southeastdweller the stressful meeting got cancelled Smile but will be next Monday instead Sad. Spent the time in other meetings with other colleagues instead so not a wasted trip and managed, by some miracle, to steer clear of the train station croissants this morning and the snacks / various eateries on the way home. Had a low cal M & S sandwich and low cal crisps instead which came in at 400 or so cals. And just eaten two squares of Dairy Milk when I got in. Phew!!

Congrats to all other Monday fasters and I hope you've all enjoyed your dinners now.

BsshBossh · 01/07/2013 20:22

peplum it's going to be very white and minimalist. The dust is going to show forever, isn't it? Grin

somewherebecomingrain · 01/07/2013 20:53

I made it. Two slices of seed-rich toast (240 cals) and a med and large fried eggs ( in non stick fry pan and v little oil - est 200) and I'm in at 660 cals excluding three teas.

Funnily I find this the easy bit. My tough time is 12-3pm and poss again 5-7pm. Now all I gotta do is go to sleep.

So helpful to hang with you all. Sorry if I don't name check, it moves so fast and I've a baby.

Breakfast - muesli with a drizzle of honey. Or maybe bagel butter and strawberry jam.

Southeastdweller · 01/07/2013 21:20

So for dinner I just had a big pile of veg (including sweetcorn Grin) and did a small dressing of balsamic vinegar and olive oil thinking the tablespoon and a half of the oil I used was about 90 calories. I just checked and one tablespoon has a calorie content of 120 calories which means with my biscuits earlier I've gone over my allowance today considerably.

Think I'll do a mini-fast tomorrow.

babysaurus · 01/07/2013 21:32

I did it! Wine free! And FULL of veg! I think I have actually come in at just under 600 but I am not beating myself up about it. I ended up having s
And my god, I'll enjoy not fasting tomorrow!

babysaurus · 01/07/2013 21:36

Half my post vanished, weird! Was saying that I ended up having a bit of wholemeal pitta as I made dinner as I was feeling dizzy which would have taken me over, but it's not too much so no big deal.

Thanks for including me ladies. It made a hell of a difference!

Well done to all my fellow fasters today too, and good luck if you are doing it tomorrow.

Off to bed now, night!

BsshBossh · 01/07/2013 21:42

Well done today's FDers. I'm done too. Just sipping my low cal hot chocolate then 2 NFDs to plan for - what on earth do I fancy eating and how should I prepare it sans kitchen. A trip to Waitrose or M&S for yummy picnicy food is in order I think - if I can leave the builders alone for an hour... Fasting is definitely easier right now.

alwaysanauntie · 01/07/2013 22:09

Oh. Dear. God

Just put my food into mfp for yesterday, but stopped when it hit 3999 cals Shock Shock shock]. Had buffet at mum and dad's which involved smoked salmon, focaccia, hollandaise sauce, champagne and chocolate cake amongst other things, but was still hungry when I got home at 7 so went to pub for dinner. Don't know how they can justify 1500 cals for steak and ale pie with mash and veg when the pie is not much bigger than my fist - the mash must be 50% butter! Utterly horrifying, will check cals online before we go next time!

Therefore, unscheduled fast day here, also did circuits at lunch. However talk upthread of twirls means I'm now desperate to snaffle the one in the fridge before bed. Just keep chanting "you CAN have it, TOMORROW" for breakfast...

bssh we've not technically had an oven since January (well, there is one here, but given last owner cooked all food once a week in it and never cleaned I've not been brave enough to open it! Probably full of spiders anyway...) so at least it's kept me away from chips and garlic bread :) Still, it's surprising what you can find to cook in the microwave when you start looking, not all of it high cal. At least it means I usually have salads for lunch - much needed after last weekend Grin

Talkinpeace · 01/07/2013 22:17

fasted today
then had a tortilla omlette for supper (3 eggs, fresh spinach, sping onions, a bit of salami and pancetta and some parmesan) and a slice of bread and butter : probably around 7-800 calories

and still feel full three hours later!
