Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 22! Put down that biscuit - you can eat it tomorrow

BetsyBell · 23/06/2013 15:54

The continuing thread for those of us following either the 5:2 diet or the alternate-day fasting diet.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012, and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat what you like, or approximately your TDEE (see explanation below). Alternate-day fasting is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low, around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

ADF = Alternate-day Fasting, as it says on the tin, fasting every other day rather than 5:2.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV = Non scale victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his new book on the subject. Please go check them out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

I know a number of people lurk on this thread, as this is currently quite popular. Please just jump in and post if you're new- you'll find a lot of support here.

Here is a list of links to get you started with this way of eating. Please let us know if you find a new article or some other information online:

First things first, here are links to some of our previous threads:
most recent, one before that, another one!

Another thread which breadandwine has started is a good resource for some of the tips and links that get lost in these big threads. In addition to sharing links, we try to condense some of our top tips for fasting there. Keep in mind, we all do this differently, so these are just tips, not rules. This might be a good place to catch up with us if you're feeling a bit lost!

frenchfancy has a recipe thread over here, please post any low-calorie recipes there so they don't get lost in these bigger threads!

If you've been at this a while and are moving on to maintaining your goal weight, there is a thread here to discuss that.

Here is the link to the BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon.

There's a link to the aforementioned Horizon programme here.

A blog post here gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

A Telegraph article which comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting. (I highly recommend this for an overview)

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4 cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant.) it also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

Something to consider if you are currently your ideal BMI: this appears to suggest the benefits for women at a lower BMI might not be seeing the same health benefits that are found on men at their ideal BMI.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnichts for putting together all the info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this diet!

Blooming autocorrect!!!

babysaurus · 01/07/2013 07:04

Thanks everyone!
Am hoping I can put DS down for a sleep soon as I am both knackered and craving marmite on toast!
Must sip water, must sip water, must sip water...

BetsyBell · 01/07/2013 07:27

Hello babysaurus. You don't have to sip water, you can chug down as much tea/coffee etc as you like - I couldn't do this without it!

Fasting today. As usual it feels much needed after the weekend, especially as I failed to do any running.

OP posts:
newbiefrugalgal · 01/07/2013 07:40

Fasting today too.
Big dinner put sat night which I felt 'stuffed' from and not much walking all weekend. So gym class this morning for me to get me started. Monday is weigh in day will let you know how that goes shortly.

JudithOfThePiece · 01/07/2013 07:43

Morning all.

My second attempt at a fast day today. Bring it on!

mttum · 01/07/2013 07:44

Morning all!

Tortoise, I am with you for dry July, particularly after booze fuelled weekend with family just now. Anyone else on board the wagon?

Also, , I AM PUTTING THE SCALES INTO THE ATTIC for a month, so also July. I am fed up of being tyrannised by the small platform in the bathroom, so am going to see how it goes without it for a while. Anyone care to join me?

On with the fast day, best wishes to all other Monday fasters Smile

babysaurus · 01/07/2013 07:49

betsy the water is more of a filling up thing. I am alsoon my fourth cup of tea!

babysaurus · 01/07/2013 07:53

Am wondering about weighing myself too now. Would be nice to know what I've lost once I start losing but am also rather concerned it will prove too depressing and therefore daunting too.
My downfall is both bread and wine. Looking after DS its easy to have toast / sandwich / more toast and, then when he's in bed, a proper dinner. I also LOVE my glass of wine when he's gone to bed but that's getting ridiculous as I am having two thirds of a bottle most nights Blush Don't want to do a dry July but am certainly going to drastically cut back!

mttum · 01/07/2013 07:53

Sorry, it was crystaldc asking about dry July. Yeah, crystal, I am up for it!

CrystalDeCanter · 01/07/2013 07:56

Oh help, STOP ME! I've just got home from work and am munching nuts. MUST SHUT THE PANTRY DOOR.

Phew, panic over.

Out of interest does anyone else get a horrid taste in their mouth during fast days. I've just had a meeting with a young hipster type and I was paranoid that I was firing out the most awful stinky breath Blush.

I did look in my old "Dr" Gillian McKeith book (anyone remember her?) and she says it's to do with a hot colon or congested liver or something. Maybe more water will help?

mttum interesting idea to put the scales away. I find if I weigh myself it sort of encourages me on the straight and narrow. I do get the whole depressive thing of seeing no change etc though.

peplum HELLOOOOOO thank you for missing me Grin

mttum · 01/07/2013 07:57

Baby, cutting back is good too. Lets give the drink industry a kick up the a**e as all as the food and diet industries Grin

akarucker · 01/07/2013 07:57

Yikes - summer may actually be here - don't think I can give up my cold, crisp, Sauvignon blanc on a warm summer evening in the garden....life still needs small pleasures!

CrystalDeCanter · 01/07/2013 07:59

mttum, good luck with dry july. I have given up alcohol for a month before (fit feb I thnk), and I felt FABULOUS, all shiny faced, clear eyed, good sleeping etc, but feel sort of intimidated by doing it again, don't know why. Borderline Alcoholic

EagleRiderDirk · 01/07/2013 09:10

I'm with aka. This heavy oppressive heat requires wine to treat it Wink

The concept of giving up alcohol for a month fills me with dread. Though I managed it fine through two pregnancies so god knows why it has that effect. Good luck anyone trying it.

EagleRiderDirk · 01/07/2013 09:14

crystal put down the gillian mckeith. Or alternatively burn it! Its to do with ketones produced whilst your body breaks down fat. So in some ways its a good sign this is working! Thanks to the suggestion on earlier threads I get at least 2 days with a proper dental routine in a week, so that's another plus to this diet.

mttum · 01/07/2013 09:15

Ok all, will let you know how it goes after a month with no booze or scales Grin

BetsyBell · 01/07/2013 09:18

Have people managed to avoid a Monday weigh in this week? I remembered my own advice and didn't! I thought I'd much prefer to see my post-fast weight tomorrow and if possible hold out til Friday.

Obviously it would better to weigh in less often but part of the reason I put on weight to start with was due to lack of paying attention.

However, I've good a good working maintenance regime now so I ought to be able to avoid the scales more now.

OP posts:
peplum41 · 01/07/2013 09:20

Mttum Im down with the no scales month, but DryJuly, I cant do, too much going on where Wine would enhance the experience. However, I will no longer drink before my fast days as Ive realised I feel rubbish all day without toast to soak it up. All the best with that, lets hope when the scales come out they show it was worth it. I liked your observations on scales upthread btw.

aka fortunately its too early in the day to desire that treat you just eloquently described, so we will let you off with that.

baby hello again, Hope your fast goes ok. Can you grab a nap yourself? Good escape, passes the time.

postie I want a taster day now! Grin

peplum41 · 01/07/2013 09:41

aka oh just remembered, are you allowing yourself chocolate again? Did you manage without all June? I did not, but maybe I could try that instead of no wine. Is only in the maybe stage. July has 31 days and its too early in the month to commit.

crystal what on earth is a hot colon?? The liver thing maybe. I personally like the alternative therapy side of things. Keytone breath smells like acetone/ pear drops, whereas my dh said I had poo breath a few weeks ago! He's not the sort to bring me down, it must've been bad for him to mention it. I got some breath freshener spray for on the go minty mouth, but I do need reminding to floss, [shame]. I suppose if you give your mouth a good once over it stops you wanting to eat because you want to keep it clean.

BetsyBell · 01/07/2013 09:41

Dry July? God no - this is one of the best months for drinking! All those long summer days... (hopefully). I no longer drink in the week and but that's as far as I'm going! mttum Tempted to join you with the no scales though [gulp].

baby Phew! Glad to hear it... no caffeine on a fast day is pure hell! [mainlines coffee] Brew Grin

I wish I was one of today's tasters ppc

Eagle did upping the oral hygiene do the trick for stinky fast day breath? Extra brushing and flossing is a good way to distract from not eating too! Crystal

Katnisscupcake · 01/07/2013 09:50

Morning,

Can I join please (although I know my name doesn't help on fasting days Blush).

I am on my first fasting day of my 2nd week. I've noticed that I don't feel hungry between meals on non-fasting days which is a very quick change - but much welcomed!

Not doing as well today though. I am drinking my second cup of tea but my tummy is grumbling. I cope on fasting days by going as long as I can with just tea/fizzy low cal flavoured water. Last week I managed until 3pm quite comfortably so I'm hoping that the hunger will abate soon...

peplum41 · 01/07/2013 10:06

Hi katniss (focusing on the first half of your name), don't worry, the hunger wave will soon pass. I felt despondently hungry until about 9 am, feel ok now. Maybe see if you can manage until 4 today. Try a marmite drink, although that's something I've not done for ages. Might do later, always amazed how beefy it tastes.

You're very lucky if you don't feel snacky on your NFDs, I do and its my downfall calorie wise.

EagleRiderDirk · 01/07/2013 10:11

betsy it seems to work for me, or at least OH hasn't noticed I'm as smelly anymore. I'm happy its making me conscious enough that I'm flossing as well. I'm rubbish at doing the full routine otherwise. I'd love to see that touted as another plus point to this woe 'may improve your dental health routine' Wink

Katnisscupcake · 01/07/2013 10:38

I actually had Bovril last week - a cube dissolved in boiling water - that was nice too - it has the same calories as tea so I may well give that a go soon. Smile Thank you for reminding me!!

QueenBoudicea · 01/07/2013 10:41

Morning all - lost 2lbs on my first week - weighed myself after my second fast day - am now on day three after a somewhat calorific sunday involving birthdays, cake and cream (which I don't normally even eat Blush

Fasting on a monday and weds this week - I woke up ravenous and quite wobbly this morning - I'm really suffering with hayfever so I was wondering if the meds were making me feel wierd.

Am planning an anchovy salad for lunch and then spicy aubergine stew with small spoon of couscous for dinner.

I admire those of you aiming for a dry July - I don't think I could manage that :o
